VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN’S

RUGBY
7S CRCS TOURNAMENT

MAY 28-29, 2022

GAME 1 - IOWA STATE VS. VIRGINIA TECH
(MAY 28)

First game of the day was a major

success. The game was ours at 17-7, and the
tries were made by Jennavieve Miller, Kate
Santus, and Callie Houston made a penalty
try. Although no kicks were made in this
game, our team did not need them because
of how well we played defensively. The
team was able to keep Iowa State from
scoring the entire second half while still
playing aggressive offense that could not be
stopped. Overall, the tournament started
with a great win and it set a precedent for
the team to go all out, even in the hot New
Orleans sun.

GAME 2 - GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY VS. VIRGINIA TECH (MAY 28)

Okay, this was admittedly an unfortunate game. We lost 5-12, but Kate Santus was
able to at least put those points on the board. Even though this was not a win for us, we
still showed great effort and strived for the W until the very end. Grand Canyon was a
great opponent and showed equal skill, so the team was happy to have played someone
that only bettered them in terms of competition.

GAME 3 - UC DAVIS VS. VIRGINIA TECH (MAY 29)

SHUTOUT! The score was 17-0, with tries made by Kate Santus, Kara Hendren, and
Sydney Gaskin, and Kara made 1 of those 3 kicks. This was a great game that showcased
how well our team plays together as well as our determined spirit. Even though the last
game the previous day was a loss, the team came back better than ever and took the win
with ease. The team really worked the structure that they have been perfecting
throughout the season, and that practice truly paid off, per the end result. Every time the
team played together, they got better and executed more and more each game.

GAME 4 - NORTHERN IOWA VS. VIRGINIA TECH (MAY 29)

It hurt to leave New Orleans on this note, but sadly Northern Iowa took this game
at 5-12. Sydney Gaskin made one try but no kick was made, and that was how VT got
points on the board. Even though the team did not manage to win, they still placed 6th at

the tournament overall out of 28 teams. Even though it’s not 1st place, it was still a huge
success for our team and also a great way to end the season for the seniors. Our
president of the 2021-2022 season, Taylor Rebne, had some kind words to say on the
subject: “This last game was bittersweet because it was my last game as a Virginia Tech
rugby player. Senior year has been so amazing, and I could not have chosen a better
team to end these 4 years with. I’m so thankful for all the friends I have made and all the
opportunities rugby has given me. Once a hokie, always a hokie”. These kinds of
memories are what our teams live for, regardless of whether a loss or win is involved.
The love our team has for the sport and for each other trumps all, and we will always be
proud to represent that kind of spirit at any and every tournament.
