BOOSTER

GAS COMPRESSOR
WET OIL SEAL

1
BOOSTER  • OBJECTIVE
GAS  After completing this course, participants able to:
COMPRESSOR • State the function of the seal oil and buffer gas system
WET OIL SEAL • Identify the seal oil and buffer gas system components
• State the function the seal oil and buffer gas system
components
• Describe in proper sequence, the flow of sealing air,
seal oil and buffer gas through their respective systems

2
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM FUNCTION
GAS  • Prevents lube oil contamination of process gas and
COMPRESSOR blocks process gas from entering oil drain lines
• Utilizes the engine lubrication tank for its oil reservoir
WET OIL SEAL

3
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM COMPONENTS
GAS  • ENGINE DRIVEN MAIN SEAL OIL PUMP
• Main seal oil pump driven by engine mounted on engine
COMPRESSOR accessory drive housing
WET OIL SEAL • AUXILIARY SEAL OIL PUMP
• This pump is driven by a pneumatic motor or an AC electric
motor
• The auxiliary seal oil pump runs during the start sequence,
when the prelube pressure reaches the set pressure and stops
when the engine reaches the compressor loading speed. At the
time of shutdown, this pump will run automatically as the
engine speed decreases to below loading speed, and will stop
after the compressor casing pressure is vented
• FILTER
• Seal oil filter located downstream of the pump 4
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM COMPONENTS
GAS  • RELIEF VALVE
• Located in the oil line between the individual pumps and the
COMPRESSOR filter
WET OIL SEAL • protects the system components against excessive pressure.
• This valve open at a predetermined pressure setting to return
excess oil to the oil tank through the compressor drain line
• DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE BYPASSING REGULATOR
• Regulate and maintain the pressure of the seal oil entering the
compressor to keep it stable
• Installed in the seal oil line header to limit the oil pressure to
100 psi above the trap inlet pressure of the high pressure
compressor

5
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM COMPONENTS
GAS  • SEAL OIL DP CONTROL VALVE
• a pressure reducing valve which is used to keep the seal oil at
COMPRESSOR the desired pressure setting which is higher than any
WET OIL SEAL compressor trap inlet pressure
• Nominal pressure is maintained at 20 psi higher than trap inlet
pressure
• BUFFER GAS DP CONTROL VALVE
• used to maintain the gas buffer seal pressure at a
predetermined setting which is higher than any compressor
suction pressure
• Supplied at the appropriate pressure to the “Buffer Gas In”
ports on the suction and discharge capsules from high‐pressure
compressor’s discharge
6
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM COMPONENTS
GAS  • SEAL OIL/BUFFER GAS TRAPS
COMPRESSOR • The seal oil trap receives a mixture of seal oil and buffer gas
from the gas compressor bearing and seal assembly through
WET OIL SEAL the outlet holes
• Inside the traps, the gas is separated from the oil to prevent gas
from entering the lube oil tank and ensure that the seal oil is
also not drawn, by way of the compressor suction line, through
the compressor and into the pipeline

7
BOOSTER  • SYSTEM COMPONENTS
GAS  • SEAL OIL DEGASSING FLUE
• Remove the remaining buffer gas en‐trained in the oil seal
COMPRESSOR before the oil is returned to the oil tank.
WET OIL SEAL • The gas is released to the atmospheric through the flame
arrestor, and the oil is drained to the oil tank by way of the
compressor drain line
• Supply of sparging gas may be piped into the flue to assist in
removing gas from the oil

8
BOOSTER  • OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION
GAS  • Initiation of start sequence
COMPRESSOR • Pre lube oil pressure reaches a pre set values, usually 6
WET OIL SEAL psig
• Auxiliary seal oil pump is started in preparation for the
boost compressor purge and pressurization process
• Oil is pumped to the seal oil flow regulator which
maintains a constant flow to DP regulator
• DP regulator maintains seal oil pressure at approximately
20 psid higher than suction
• Regulated oil is directed to the gas compressor forward
and aft oil seals to pressurize the seals against gas
leakage 9
BOOSTER  • OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION
GAS  • Buffer gas is maintained at a pressure differential above
COMPRESSOR suction gas of 15 psid by the buffer gas DP valve
WET OIL SEAL • Buffer gas is directed to the opposite side of the seal to
pressurize against oil leakage into the compressor
• Seal oil with entrained buffer gas drains into the oil/seal
separator where the mixture is separated, returning oil
to the tank and venting gas to the suction flange
