GAS TURBINE
FUEL SYSTEM

1
SOLAR GAS  • OBJECTIVE
TURBINE After completing this course, participants able to:
FUEL SYSTEM
• State the function of the fuel system on the gas
turbine engine
• Know and explain in detail the functions of the
components in the gas fuel system
• know and explain, in the correct order, the basic
operating steps of the gas fuel system

2
SOLAR GAS  • FUEL SYSTEM FUNCTION
TURBINE • Deliver fuel at the required pressure and flow to the
FUEL SYSTEM fuel injectors in the combustion chamber

• Schedules fuel flow during acceleration

• Regulates fuel flow during all phases of package

operation and compressor loads

3
SOLAR GAS  • INTERRELATED SYSTEM
TURBINE • Fuel Metering System
• Consists : shutoff valves, supply manifold, flow control valves and
FUEL SYSTEM fuel injectors
• Control system monitors the fuel metering system to regulate fuel
flow to change engine speed (Ngp) and temperature (T5)
• Pilot System
• Provided from a port on the main fuel supply manifold or an
external compressed air source
• Supply pressure to the pneumatically actuated fuel shutoff valves
that connected to a solenoid valve
• Compressor Air System
• Supply Pcd to various system
• Pcd is measured to determine fuel flow metering, purge fuel lines
and injectors and to close exhaust diffuser drain valves 4
SOLAR GAS  • FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • FUEL GAS STRAINER
FUEL SYSTEM • remove particle contaminants from the fuel supply
• Prevent blockage of orifice and damage to components
• PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SHUTOFF VALVE
• Shutoff valve
• Connected to a pilot solenoid valve that controls pneumatic
pressure that open/close valve
• FUEL GAS CONTROL VALVE
• Meter the flow and volume of fuel to the fuel manifolds
• Electric motor driven
• Positioned by the control system

7
SOLAR GAS  • FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • GAS FUEL MANIFOLD AND INJECTORS
FUEL SYSTEM • Encircles the combustor case
• Provide individual tubing connection to each injector
• Injectors are of right‐angle design protruding into the
combustion liner dome in the axial direction

8
SOLAR GAS  • FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS
TURBINE • IGNITER TORCH
FUEL SYSTEM • Attached to a boss at the bottom of the combustor case
• Gas fuel supplied to the torch to begin the ignition sequence
• The igniter is an aircraft‐style spark plug mounted on the torch
assembly with its tip extending into the torch tube
• Energy for spark plug supplied by an ignition exciter

10
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • Valve Check Sequence
FUEL SYSTEM • Control system test the integrity of the shutoff valves
• Gas fuel pressure is applied to the primary and secondary shutoff
valves
• The valves must hold pressure and open/close when commanded
• Control system annunciates a valve check failure and aborts the
start cycle
• Start sequence is initiated, primary shutoff valve open
• Simultaneously, a 5 second timer is activated
• Increase the pressure at the gas fuel valve check pressure switch
• Primary shutoff valve close
• Pressure, trapped between the closed primary and secondary valve,
remain closed until the end of the prelube cycle

11
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • Valve Check Sequence
FUEL SYSTEM • When pre lube timer times out, secondary shutoff valve open
• Gas fuel valve check timer is restarted on a new 5 second interval
• Pressure at gas fuel valve check pressure switch decrease
• Primary shutoff valve is left closed and the secondary shutoff valve is
left open in preparation for the ignition sequence

• Purge Crank Cycle

• Remove combustibles from the engine exhaust system
• Start system cranks the engine to create air movement

12
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • Ignition Sequence
• Starter continues to crank the engine
FUEL SYSTEM
• Primary and secondary shutoff valves open to supply gas fuel
to the metering system
• Gas fuel flows through the torch and is ignited in the presence
of combustion air
• The torch flame flares into the airflow inside the engine
combustion liner
• The injectors mix fuel in the air stream inside the combustion
liner
• The torch ignites the fuel‐air mixture and engine lightoff
occurs as the fuel/air mixture reaches an optimal value
• Indicated of T5 above 350 oF, ignition exciter and torch
solenoid valve are de‐energize
13
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • Acceleration Sequence
FUEL SYSTEM • Following light off, starter continues to crank the engine
• Control system increases the fuel flow to gradually elevate T5
and NGP
• NGP 60‐75%, start system is de energized
• Control system increases the rate fuel supply until NGP 90%,
engine ready for load

14
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • Fuel Control Modes
FUEL SYSTEM • NGP Mode
• Normal operation
• Keep engine operated at NGP set point max 100%

• NPT Mode
• The control system will switch to NPT mode if the NPT speed reaches
100% before the NGP reaches the set point
• The control system limits the power delivered to the compressor by
reducing engine speed, this keeps the power turbine from
experiencing an over speed condition
• This is purely an indication of a problem with the equipment and
usually the compressor does not operate at the specified design
conditions

15
SOLAR GAS  • FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TURBINE • T5 Mode
FUEL SYSTEM • The control system will switch to T5 mode when T5 temperature reaches
the set point
• This temperature is limited to give the engine a long life

• Min Fuel Mode

• Min fuel mode is used to limit the minimum amount of fuel to keep the
engine from stalling
• This control will work when the engine decelerating control system
• If the engine dies, the set point must be increased. This can occur due to
reduced BTU in fuel.
