LESSON

Critical aspects of safety and housekeeping

in CNC milling
CREATE CNC MILLING PART PROGRAMS

Accidents are often the result of negligence and

carelessness.

Machine operators, setup personnel and service

personnel should always be considerate and
observe day-to-day safety procedures.
CREATE CNC MILLING PART PROGRAMS

Prevention of
accidents is
everyone’s
responsibility
and should be
the top priority.
SAFETY ATTIRE
1. When in the workshop, safety toe-shoes with slip
proof and safety goggles must be worn at all times.
2. Loose clothing could be dragged into the machines
and result in severe injuries or even death. Avoid
wearing such clothing.
3. Neckties, scarves, gloves (except those worn for
protection when using sharp-edged cutting tools or
hot objects), watches and jewelry should not be
worn as far as possible. These too may get dragged
into machines.
4. Male students should have short and neat hair.
5. Female students with long hair should have their
hair neatly tied or pinned up and restrained with a
hair cap or net.
SAFETY ATTIRE

1. Always keep your work area clean and tidy, free of

debris, water or oil.
2. Be conscious of protruding machine parts and avoid
getting hurt by them.
3. Ensure work area does not have hazardous
obstructions such as workbenches.
4. Return tools and equipment to their original place
immediately after use.
5. Avoid using compressed air to remove chips from
the machines, as flying chips will dirty the
environment or get stuck between machine parts
and spoil the machines.
SAFETY WORK PRACTICES
 When using sharp, pointed tools, one must put
on gloves or a shop cloth.
 Before using tools, check if they are in good
working conditions and reject defective tools.
 Hand-held tools such as wrenches, measuring
equipment, hammers and other additional parts
of the machines should be removed immediately
after the process is done.
 All protective guards must be in place and both
tools and work piece securely held before the
machining process is started.
 All machines must be switched off when cleaning
or making any measurements or adjustments.
SAFETY WORK PRACTICES

 Only one person should be using a machine each

time.
 Do not place your hands or arms near moving
parts of machines.
 Use safe lifting practices for heavy objects.
 Consider safety in all your actions and approach
instructor when in doubt.
SAFETY OPERATING ON CNC MACHINE

These are some general safety which must be

observed when operating CNC Milling Machine.

 Immediately stop the machine for safety, press

the Emergency stop button.
 To prevent the tool from exceeding the stroke
ends, Over travel check and Stroke check are
available.
 Never attempt to machine a work piece without
first checking the operation of the machine.
SAFETY OPERATING ON CNC MACHINE

 Before operating the machine, thoroughly

check the entered data.
 Ensure that specified feed rate is appropriate
for the intended operation.
 When using a tool compensation function,
thoroughly check the direction and
amount of compensation.
 The parameters for CNC and PMC are factory
set. Usually, there is no need to change them.
SAFETY OPERATING ON CNC MACHINE

 Do not touch a motor with wet hand. A failure

to observe this is very dangerous because
you may get electric shocks.
 Tighten all screws firmly.
 Doors are closed.
 Keep work area clean. Dirty work areas with
such hazards as oil, debris, or water on the
floor may cause someone to fall on the floor,
into the machine, or onto other objects.
 Return all tools and equipment to their proper
storage if not in used.
 Do not use compressed air to remove chips.
SAFETY OPERATING ON CNC MACHINE

 Immediately after switching on the power, do

not touch any of the keys on the MDI panel
until the position display or alarm screen
appears on the CNC unit.
 Some functions may have been implemented
at the request of the machine tool builder.
When using such functions, refer to the
manual supplied by the machine tool builder
for details of their use and any related
cautions.

SAFETY RELATED TO PROGRAMMING

1. Coordinate system setting.

2. Positioning by non-linear interpolation.
3. Function involving a rotation axis.
4. Inch / metric conversion.
5. Constant surface speed control.
6. Stroke check.
7. Tool post interference check.
8. Absolute and incremental mode.
9. Plane selection.
10. Torque limit skip.
11. Programming mirror image.
12. Compensation function.
BENEFITS OF CNC MILLING

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is economical

for mass, batch and in many cases, single-item
production.
BENEFITS OF CNC MILLING

Many factors contribute to this economic benefits,

the most important of these are as follow:-

1. High productivity rates.

2. Uniformity of product
3. Reduced component rejection.
4. Reduced tooling costs.
5. Less operator involvement.
