You are on page 1of 20

Use these hand writing pages and number cards to reinforce

numbers 1-20. The first 4 pages can be run off back to back, or
each could be cut in half to conserve paper and serve as 2 lessons.
RAINBOW WRITING is fun for all. Have children trace each
individual number in 3 different colored crayons or colored pencils
to create a rainbow effect on each number, so the first row of the
four zeros have actually been traced 12 times rather than four
times.
GAMES
1. GREATER THAN, LESS THAN, EQUAL- children cut the number
cards apart and writes their initials on the back of each card so they
don’t get mixed up with other players. Pairs of students face each
other with their cards in a pile face down. The pair of children each
turns over one card at the same time. The children decide which
number is greater/less than/or equal. The students take their own
cards back and put them to the side. When the game is over they
can mix their cards up and play again. VARIATION-To build fluency
make it a competition so that the person who correctly identifies
the cards first gets to take them as in the card game “War”. When
the game is over the cards are to be returned to their owner in
order for the children to take them home and teach their parents
to play.
2. ADDITION/SUBTRACTION-Follow the directions above but
rather than identifying greater than, less than, or equal, students
will add or subtract the numbers on the cards. VARIATION- To
build fluency make it a competition so that the person who
correctly identifies the cards first gets to take them as in the card
game “War”. When the game is over the cards are to be returned
to their owner in order for the children to take them home and
teach their parents to play.
3. PLACE VALUE-If you do Calendar Math and use straws to count
how many days you’ve been in school you use page 14 or 16 to
relate the bundles of straws to the pictures inside each number.
“One group of 10 and 7 more is 17”
ASSESSMENT-Page 11 is an assessment and a teaching tool.
Many students when learning to write numbers greater than 10
will reverse the numbers so when they want to write the number
12 for example it is written as 21. This sheet will help students
identify the correct way to write the numbers 12-19.
