Use of Can and

Can ́t
Before starting with the use of the modal

verb CAN. CAN is a word that can act as

an auxiliary, main verb or noun. However, it

only fulfills a modal function when it occupies

the position of auxiliary.

We use can/can't to talk about what

people are capable of doing and what they

are not able to do.

For example:

I can run many

I can't sleep well.
kilometers.
It is important to note that in any type of

sentence (affirmative, negative or

interrogative) with can or can't the verb

that accompanies them does not change in

the third person of the singular in the

present ("s" or "es" is not added). Can is

also often used, in colloquial language, to

ask permission to perform certain actions.
