SAUDI ARABIA

Arabian Art called

Islamic calligraphy in the form of painting or sculptures are sometimes referred to as quranic art.

Dating back 1,400 years to the first century of Islam, calligraphy is a revered art in Saudi Arabia.
Because its primary subject matter has historically been the Holy Qur'an, calligraphy is
considered to be the quintessential Islamic art form. Saudi museums collect and display rare
manuscripts.
EGYPTIAN ART

Ancient Egyptian art refers to art produced in ancient Egypt between the 6th century BC and the
4th century AD, spanning from Prehistoric Egypt until the Christianization of Roman Egypt. It
includes paintings, sculptures, drawings on papyrus, faience, jewelry, ivories, architecture, and
other art media.

Ancient Egyptian art reached considerable sophistication in painting and sculpture, and was both
highly stylized and symbolic. Much of the surviving art comes from tombs and monuments;
hence, the emphasis on life after death and the preservation of knowledge of the past.

Much of the artwork created by the Ancient Egyptians had to do with their religion. They would fill
the tombs of the Pharaohs with paintings and sculptures. Much of this artwork was there to help
the Pharaohs in the afterlife. ... The temples often held large statues of their gods as well as
many paintings on the walls.

AFRICA

African art describes the modern and historical paintings, sculptures, installations, and other
visual culture from native or indigenous Africans and the African continent. ... For more than a
millennium, the art of such areas had formed part of Berber or Islamic art, although with many
particular local characteristics.
Hieroglyphs are a form of pictorial writing that mostly represent sounds, groups of them or the
objects depicted in them.

SPAIN

Spanish art has been an important contributor to Western art and Spain has produced many
famous and influential artists including Velázquez, Goya and Picasso. Spanish art was
particularly influenced by France and Italy during the Baroque and Neoclassical periods, but
Spanish art has often had very distinctive characteristics, partly explained by the Moorish
heritage in Spain (especially in Andalusia), and through the political and cultural climate in Spain
during the Counter-Reformation and the subsequent eclipse of Spanish power under the
Bourbon dynasty.
From Picasso to tapas, Spain has a rich and unique artistic and cultural heritage. This
presentation briefly covers Spain's artistic history, its interaction with cultures such as the Ancient
Romans and the Moors, and an overview of the traditions that make Spain special.

Presented by Anne Toner, assistant professor of art and enthusiastic Spain traveler, this event is
part of the Northwest College celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and is free and open to the
public.

This Sorolla painting belongs to the Visión de España collection located in the Hispanic Society
of America. Each painting represents a region of the Iberian Peninsula. This painting depicts a
scene in Valencia where you can see two of the the most traditional Spanish outfits, which are
the typical Valencian fallero and fallera dresses, and the flag of this Spanish region in the center
of the painting.
Centuries later bullfighting and flamenco dance emerged as key elements of Spanish culture
which became a influential in many works of art. In terms of specific artists Spain's “Golden Age”
was during the 16th and 17th centuries with El Greco, Velazquez, Murillo and Ribera at the
forefront.

GREECE/ Greek Art

Greek art began in the Cycladic and Minoan civilization, and gave birth to Western classical art in
the subsequent Geometric, Archaic and Classical periods (with further developments during the
Hellenistic Period). ... Greek art is mainly five forms: architecture, sculpture, painting, pottery and
jewelry making.
Iktinos and Kallikrates, Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens, 447 – 432 B.C.E.

A shared language, religion, and culture

Ancient Greece can feel strangely familiar. From the exploits of Achilles ( a hero in the ancient
epic poem by Homer, The Illiad), about the Trojan War and Odysseus (the hero in Homer's The
Odyssey), to the treatises of Aristotle, from the exacting measurements of the Parthenon (above)
to the rhythmic chaos of the Laocoön (below), ancient Greek culture has shaped our world.
Heroes feature prominently in the wars, myths, and literature of the ancient world. Not all of
these people would be heroes by today's standards, and some wouldn't be by Classical Greek
standards, either. What makes a hero changes with the era, but it's often tied up with concepts of
bravery and virtue.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were among the best at documenting the adventures of their
heroes. These tales tell the stories of many of the biggest names in ancient history, as well as its
greatest triumphs and tragedies.

A List of Ancient Greek Painters

Greece is often considered to be the ‘Cradle of Democracy’ and one of the countries which
helped lead us into our current societal structures. They also have a rich culture full of cultural
norms, unique foods, artists and various other traditions. Concerning art in particular, ancient
Greek painters were known to have influenced many artists after them and that is who we are
going to talk about today.
ITALY / ITALIAN ART

Both Baroque and Neoclassicism originated in Rome and spread to all Western art. Italy
maintained a presence in the international art scene from the mid-19th century onwards, with
movements such as the Macchiaioli, Futurism, Metaphysical, Novecento Italiano, Spatialism,
Arte Povera, and Transavantgarde

The Creation of Adam is a fresco painting by Italian artist Michelangelo, which forms part of the
Sistine Chapel's ceiling, painted c. 1508–1512. It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from
the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man

HAWAII

The Hawaiian archipelago consists of 137 islands in the Pacific Ocean that are far from any other
land. Polynesians arrived there one to two thousand years ago, and in 1778 Captain James
Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to visit Hawaii (which they called the Sandwich
Islands). The art created in these islands may be divided into art existing prior to Cook’s arrival;
art produced by recently arrived westerners; and art produced by Hawaiians incorporating
western materials and ideas. Public collections of Hawaiian art may be found at the Honolulu
Museum of Art, the Bishop Museum (Honolulu), the Hawaii State Art Museum and the University
of Göttingen in Germany.

TRADITIONAL ART

Native Hawaii before and after European contact presents a unique and rich culture brimming
with arts, including feather work, kapa (bark cloth), petroglyphs, wood and stone carvings, and
tattoos.

TRADITIONAL ART

Native Hawaii before and after European contact presents a unique and rich culture brimming
with arts, including feather work, kapa (bark cloth), petroglyphs, wood and stone carvings, and
tattoos. Meticulously crafted and invested with deep meaning, these works were never merely
decorative – often they served practical, social and spiritual purposes.

Extremely valuable and once possessed solely by the alii (chiefs), a feather cape or helmet
required a remarkable amount of industry to create. The kia manu (bird catchers) would have to
gather an incredible number of feathers, from as many as 20,000 birds, who would be released
after a few feathers were taken. Then the crafter created a unique design embedded with
meaning for the chief and bound it all together on a woven foundation. Feathers were also used
to fabricate kahili (feather standards) and lei.

Kapa, a fine material made by beating the wauke (paper mulberry) plant, was once the primary
material for clothing and bedding. The labor-intensive process of making kapa began with
growing plants for up to two years before harvesting. Beaten with a wooden mallet into papery
sheets, the kapa is imprinted with symbolic designs and stained with colorful dyes.

Sculpting objects, such as wood, bone or stone, is another art form prevalent in old Hawaii.
Ancient petroglyphs carved in stone can be seen around the islands, their meaning still an object
of historic inquiry. Whale teeth were carved into a hook-shaped pendant for the lei niho palaoa,
an ornament traditionally worn around the neck of a chief. Wood and stone were used to depict
gods—many intricately carved master works can be seen at the Bishop Museum. And everyday
objects, such as fishhooks, were carved out of bone.

Traditional Hawaiian tattooing involves hand-tapping a needle into the skin, a sacred process
weighty with protocol to instill the wearer with spiritual power. The traditional process is
experiencing a renaissance today. The designs, connected to the wearer’s genealogy and social
hierarchy, are researched and determined by the tattooist.
