1. CORE-1:- FOR LINE DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

Proposed ratio – 600/1A

Calculation of Knee Point Voltage of the C T

Calculation of Stabilized Voltage ( Vs ) during through fault current

Where, Vs = Isc (RCT+ 2RL+ Rrelay) and Vk≥ 2 Vs

a) Isc (Short circuit Current ): 31500A

i,e Through Fault current

b) RCT (Resistance of CT) :4 ohm

c) RL ( Resistance of leadlength): 350 Mtrs. (approx.)

Considered 2 nos. core 2.5 mm sq. per run to reduce the lead resistance

Therefore the value of 2RL = (2 x 350)/2 x 0.00887 ohm

(Resistance of 2.5 mm sq. copper : 8.87 ohm per KM)
= 3.1 ohm
d) Relay to be used for protection : ABB make RED615
Relay coil resistance : 0.1 ohm

As per manufacturer’s recommendation for Class PS CT calculation is furnished

below which is same as above formula:

Vs> Max. CT Sec Current x ( CT resistance + 2 xLead resistance +Relay coil
resistance)

Therefore value of Vs = (31500/600) x (4+3.18+ 0.1)

= 52.50 x 7.28
= 382.2 V

Hence Vk= 2 x 382.2 V = 764.4 V

Vk considered = 800 V

Therefore final rating of Core-1 will be asfollows :

Ratio : 600/1A
Class : PS

Vkp≥800V

Imag≤30mA at ½ Vk
RCT≤ 4 ohm

2. CORE 2 :- FOR PROTECTION

C.T details shall be as per standard of DSP

Ratio Proposed : 400/1A

VA :30 VA
Class : 5 P 20

3. CORE 3 :- FOR METERING

C.T details shall be as per standard of DSP

Ratio : 400/1A
VA : 20 VA
Class : 1.0

4. CORE 4 :- FOR BUS ZONE PROTECTION

C.T details provided by DSP as follows :

Ratio : 3200/1A
Class : P.S

Im≤30mA at ½ Vk

RCT ≤ 20 ohm

Note:

a) Ratio of protection & metering core has been selected as 400/1A after discussion
with C.T manufactures, to avoid too many ratio in a single C.T.

b) Though Full load current is 175A, O/C & E/F setting can be selected from 5% to
100% since Protection Relay will be Numerical type.

33KV – BUSHING C.TAT 33/11.5 KV 10 MVA TRANSFORMER

1. CORE-1:- FOR LINE DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

C.T shall be matching with the Core-I of 33 KV O/D CT at MRS end i.e.

Ratio : 600/1A
Class : PS
Vkp≥800V
Im ≤ 30mA at Vk/2
RCT≤4 ohm

2. CORE-2:- FOR TRANSFORMER DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

33 KV side

Full load current at 33 KV Side = 174.95 A

Here, CT Ratio considered:400 / I A

For Transformer Differential protection purpose, proposed relay will be ABB

makeRET 615 .

For finalizing the CL – PS CT, for the Transformer Differential protection, manufacturer’s
formula for calculating Knee Point voltage of the CT is furnished belowCalculation of
Stabilized Voltage ( Vs ) during through fault current

Where, Vs = Isc (RCT + 2RL+ Rrelay) and Vk ≥ 2 Vs

a) Isc (Short circuit Current ) : 31500A

i,e Through Fault current

b) RCT (Resistance of CT) :3.0 ohm

c) RL ( Resistance of lead length): 100 Mtrs. (approx.)

Considered 2 nos. core 2.5 mm sq. per run to reduce the lead resistance

Therefore the value of 2RL = (2 x 100)/2 x 0.00887 ohm

(Resistance of 2.5 mm sq. copper : 8.87 ohm per KM)
= 0.887 ohm
d) Relay to be used for protection : ABB make RET615
Relay coil resistance : 0.1 ohm

As per manufacturer’s recommendation (ABB manual for RET relays)for Class

PS CT calculation is furnished below which is same as above formula:

Vs> Max. CT Sec Current x ( CT resistance + 2 xLead resistance +Relay coil

resistance)

Therefore value of Vs = (31500/400) x (3.0+0.887+ 0.1)

= 78.75 x 3.987
= 314.0 V

Hence Vk considered = 2 x 314.0V =628.0V, say650 V

Final Specification of CT at 33 KV side will be

Ratio :400/1A
Class : PS
Vk≥ 650V
Im ≤ 30mA at Vk/ 2
RCT ≤ 3 ohm

MAXIMUM EARTH FAULT CURRENT CALCULATION AT 11 KV SIDE

Phase Volt = 11 KV / √3 = 6.35 KV

Resistance of Neutral Grounding Resistor = 12.09 Ohm

Hence Maximum allowable Earth Fault current shall be = 6.350 V / 12.09 = 525 A

1. C.T -1 :- FOR STANDBY EARTH FAULT ( considered CDG 12 of GE T&D )

Ratio : 800/1A ( As guided by DSP )

Class : 5 P 20
VA = 15 VA

2. C.T -2:- FOR REF PROTECTION

Proposed RELAY Type CAG 14 (of GE T&D or Schneider)

It requires class PS type CT

Required VK shall be matching with 11 KV side REF CT

Ratio : 800/1A ( As guided by DSP )Ratio : 800/1A ( Matching with CT at 11 KV panel

for REF ). See detailed calculation for 11KV REF CT at 11 KV VCB panel

Ratio : 800/1A
Class : PS

Vk≥ 200V

Im ≤ 30mA at Vk/ 2
RCT ≤ 5 ohm

CURRENT TRANSFORMER AT 11 KV VCB PANEL

Full load current of 10 MVA 33 / 11 KV Transformer shall be 524.93 A, say 525 A.

Ratio of all the cores of CT shall be 800 / 1A (As advised by DSP)

Therefore the Specification of CT shall be as follows:

1. CORE-1:- METERING

Ratio : 800/1A
Class :1.0
VA = 15 VA

2. CORE-2 :- PROTECTION

Ratio : 800/1A
Class :5 P 20
VA = 15 VA

3. CORE-3:- FOR REF PROTECTION

Proposed Relay shall be CAG 14 of GE T&D / Schneider

For finalizing the CL PS CT, for the Restricted EF protection, manufacturer’s common
formula for calculating Knee Point voltage of the CT is furnished below:

Vk= 2 Is ( RCT + 2 RL )

Where Is= Rated fault Current at CT secondary

RCT = Resistance of CT sec in ohms
RL = Resistance of lead wire from relay to CT
Resistance of CT:5 ohm

Resistance of lead length : 5Mtrs. (approx.), since the relay will be placed at
11 KV VCB panel
Considered 1 no. core 2.5 mm sq. per run
Therefore the value of 2RL = (2 x 5) x 0.00887 ohm = 0.0887 ohm,
(Resistance of 2.5 mm sq. copper:8.87 ohm per KM)
Max. Through fault current at 11 KV side(where REF CT should be stable) shall be
asfollows:
IF = 10,000 KVA / (0.083 x √ 3 x 11 KV) = 6324 A say, 6500 A
Therefore VK = 2 x 6500/800 x ( 5 + 0.0887 ) = 82.69 V

Considered VKcan be 83V at 11 KV side of Transformer

However we shall consider VK as 200 V

Final Specification of CT at 11 KV side will be

Ratio : 800/1A
Class : PS
Vk≥ 200V
Im ≤ 30mA at Vk/ 2
RCT ≤ 5 ohm

4. CORE-4:- FOR TRANSFORMER DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

Ratio : 800/1A ( Ratio matching with HV Side will not be any problem since the
Differential Relays shall be Numerical type)
11 KV side CT for TRAFO DIFF. ROTECTION

Full load current at 11 KV Side = 524.85 A

Therefore CT Ratio considered: 800 / I A

Max. Through fault current at 11 KV side (where TRAFO DIFF CT should be stable )
shall be as follows :
IF = 10,000 KVA / (0.083 x √ 3 x 11 KV) = 6324 A say, 6500 A

For Transformer Differential protection purpose, proposed relay will be ABB

makeRET 615 .

For finalizing the CL PS CT, for the Transformer Differential protection, manufacturer’s
formula for calculating Knee Point voltage of the CT is furnished below. Calculation of
Stabilized Voltage ( Vs ) during through fault current

Where, Vs = Isc (RCT + 2RL+ Rrelay) and Vk ≥ 2 Vs

a) Isc (Short circuit Current ): 6500A

i,e Through Fault current

b) RCT (Resistance of CT) :5 ohm

c) RL ( Resistance of lead length): 5Mtrs. (approx.) Since the relay will be placed at

11 KV VCB panel
Considered 1 no. core : 2.5 mm sq. per run of 5 m each

Therefore the value of 2RL = (2 x 5) x 0.00887 ohm = 0.0887 ohm

(Resistance of 2.5 mm sq. copper 8.87 ohm per KM)

Relay to be used for protection : ABB make RET615

Relay coil resistance : 0.1 ohm

As per manufacturer’s recommendation for Class PS CT calculation is furnished

below which is same as above formula:

Vs> Max. CT Sec Current x ( CT resistance + 2 xLead resistance +Relay coil

resistance)

Therefore value of Vs = (6500/800) x (5+0.0887+ 0.1)

= 8.125 x 5.1887
= 42.158 V

Hence Vkconsidered : 2 x 42.158 V = 84.32 V, say 85 V

However we shall consider Vk as 300 V

Final Specification of CT at 11 KV side will be

Ratio : 800/1A
Class : PS
Vk≥ 300V
Im ≤ 30mA at Vk/ 2
RCT ≤ 5 ohm
