Layout in Production

Made by Julia Uchanina, group 183

Introduction

´ Aim: to study the use of layout in production, analyze its types and
conclude if it is effective and efficient or not

´ Tasks:
- to study scientific literature on the topic of layout (books, articles);
- to analyze the information about layout
- to find and analyze the real situation of using layout in the company
- to make conclusions according to the study

What is Layout

Layout in production is a
modeling process that
breaks down
manufacturing algorithm
into certain stages in
order to maximize
efficiency of production
and quality of the
product.
Objectives of Layout in Production*

1. Streamline the flow of materials through the plant.

2. Facilitate the manufacturing process.
3. Maintain high turnover of in-process inventory.
4. Minimize material handling and cost.
5. Effective utilization of people, equipment and space.
6. Make effective utilization of cubic space.
7. Flexibility of manufacturing operations and arrangements.
8. Provide for employee convenience, safety and comfort.
9. Minimize investment in equipment.
10. Minimize overall production time.
11. Maintain flexibility of arrangement and operation.
12. Facilitate the organizational structure.

Types of Layout in Production

´ Product layout

´ Process layout

´ Fixed position layout

´ Combination type
Product Layout

According to David Bennet, product layout is

where machines, equipment, and workplaces
are arranged according to the sequence of operations required for a defined
product.
Process Layout

Layout of elements, which runs certain process cycle at a certain sequence

Fixed Position Layout

In a fixed position layout, the transformed resources remains (more or less)

stationary, while the transforming resources in the form of equipment, machinery,
plant and people, who do the processing, move as necessary
Combination Type of Layout

Nowadays in pure state any form of layouts discussed earlier is rarely found.
Therefore, generally the layouts used in industries are the compromise of the
already mentioned layouts.
Case on the example of the company
‘Vermont Teddy Bear’
Information about the Company

Founded: 1981
Sphere: production of teddy bears
Location of production: Vermont, US
Values: love, family, corporate responsibility,
lifetime bear care, respect
Process Layout

fur-cutting stuffing and sewing

workstation workstation

dressing station
Why Process Layout?

´ Low volume of production is needed

´ Customized products
´ A lot of handwork
Conclusion

Layout is a very effective approach to production. The main advantages of it

are easy usage and structure with precise stages of an algorithm, which may
help managers set up their production lines. If every detail is studied, then
every worker will be efficient and the product will be of high quality. However,
there are disadvantages both for workers and for managers. Layout in
production prescribes monotone work for everyone, so workers may be at
least bored and at worst – depressed about little changes in their everyday
life. For managers, layout in production is very risky and sometimes costly.
