One of the most popular music genres among both the younger and older generations. Pop

songs are characterized by catchy melodies and upbeat rhythms. It is also easy to sing along with

as its lyrics are simple to understand and remember.

most popular pop songs across history.

2. Classical Music

This is one of the oldest types of music, dating back to the 5th century. Classical music is

distinguished by simple diatonic harmony, contrasting moods, and well-balanced melodies. This

genre is also characterized by its homophonic texture and emphasis on elegance.

Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Puccini's O mio babbino caro, Felix Mendelssohn's

Symphony No. 4, and Beethoven's Für Elise are among the most inspiring works of classical

music.

3. Hiphop and Rap Music

This genre have distinct rhythmic beats that are more defined on the bass line. The vocals

are the main attraction here. Rappers sing at a rapid pace and frequently deviate from the beat.
A rap song may be written to verbally attack another person or group of people. A song like

this is known as a "diss track."

4. Gospel Music

It is one of the few music genres that is associated with a specific religion, in this case,

Christianity. The overpowering Christian vocals are a key feature that defines gospel music. It

also includes intricate rhythms, harmony, and distinct call and response patterns. Gospel music is

performed for religious, spiritual, and aesthetically pleasing reasons.

Sam Cooke's Peace in the Valley, Marian Anderson's Move On Up A Little Higher, and

Aretha Franklin's There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood are among the most popular gospel

songs. 

5. Jazz Music

Syncopated rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, bent notes, improvisation, distinct

voices, and pitch and timbre distortions characterize jazz music. It originated in the United States

during the 19th and 20th centuries among African-Americans. It is widely assumed that listening

to jazz music has a calming effect and can benefit your brain.

6. Ballads

Ballads are songs that tell a story in some way. Commonly, they have a slow tempo and are

filled with emotion. This type of song isn't limited to one genre; a ballad can be pop, rock, or

hip-hop. Certain ballads may contain heavy sounds, in which case they are referred to as "power"

ballads.
