General guidelines
What is described in this manual?
This manual describes additional recommendations, regulation and important information for Marine
NT NT NT
application of InteliSys , InteliGen ,InteliMains or InteliDrive DCU Marine controllers and their
accessories.
Base recommendations are described in file “IGS-NT Application Guide 05-2013.pdf”.

Worldwide there are dozens of different Marine certifications with different requirements and rules.
Purpose of this manual is explanation of notes/condition from our Marine certificates and illustration of
recommended solution. The manual contains recommendations and conditions which were mentioned by
certification engineer during certification process and they condition validation of certification. For completely
certification of ship is necessary to comply all rules of a relevant Marine certification.

At each part this document is specified type of Marine certification, for which is this part relevant.

Controller is tested and approved:

- For location in Machinery spaces and Control room – Location class B.
- According the EMC rules for general power distribution zones.

Used abbreviations

GL: Germanischer Lloyd certification

SynchroScope mode
Relevant:

GL: Separate synchroniser is required. (for synchronisation process and closing the breaker is neccesary to

Solution of double check of synchronisation by two ComAp controllers.

IGS-NT controller in „SynchroScope application“ all the time evaluates voltages and frequency from right and
left side and in case of synchronism binary output „GCBCloseEna“ is activated.
(Binary output „In synchronism" is activated in case of synchronism only, binary output „GCBCloseEna is
active in case of synchronisation and in case of dead bus)
This binary output (GCBCloseEna) is connected to the main gen-set/generator controller to binary input
„GCB disable“ for blocking the closing the breaker without double check of synchronisation.
Binary output for control of breaker is secured/blocked by signals from both controllers (close the breaker is
possible when the conditions for closing the breaker have been met in both controllers (voltages in
synchronism or no voltage on the bus).
No voltage on bus (dead bus) and closing the breaker to dead bus occurs in case of black out on the ship
only.

Configuration of SynchroScope controller:
LBI: HotStandby is activated by Logical 1 – in card LBI
LBI: Gen sync is activated all the time by Logical 1 – in card LBI - Synchro check is actived all the time
- In case that the bus and generator voltage are in synchronism or bus is without voltage (voltage is
lower than 15V) - Binary output “GCBCloseEna” is activated
- Binary output signal “GCBCloseEna” from SynchroScope controller is used in primary gen-set or
generator controller for double check before closing breaker during synchronism

Configuration of primary gen-set/generator controller:

BO: GCBCloseEna from synchroscope controller is used for permit of closing the breaker (connected to
BI:GCB Disable)

This "SynchroScope controller" is used for evaluation the synchronism only.

This "SynchroScope controller" does not care about any protections, engine or generator.
It measures bus and generator voltage only and in the case of synchronism both voltages or no voltage on
the bus – it activates/deactivates binary output “GCBCloseEna”.

Double check in case of synchronisation process before closing breaker is strictly required for
certification of ships according to Germanischer Lloyd certification.

In primary controller must be connected signal GCBCloseEna from SynchroScope to binary input
GCB Disable for ensure double check of synchronisation.

Safety requirements
Some additional, independent safety and protection devices are necessary to meet safety requirements of
Rules and Regulations of Classification Societies.
NT
The project designer has to take care to follow Marine regulation in project design wiring and InteliGen or
NT
InteliSys controller configuration and setpoint setting.

For bigger engines is necessary to use additional, independent equipment for Emergency stop, Over speed,
Low oil pressure and Over current protection.

The maximal wire length for Binary (Analog) inputs and outputs should be less than 10 meters, otherwise the
separation relay or additional protection has to be used.

To have full Surge protection ±2kV for controller power supply terminals the external component
(e.g. two DK4/35 U S14 K60 from Weidmueller for DIN rail) has to be connected.

Default configuration

Default configuration can be modified using the GenConfig-3.0 (or higher) PC tool. Please take care of
following items that are included in default configuration file:

- The function "Virtual Peripheries" shall not be used for marine application.
- An automatic start of the generator after acknowledgement of alarm shall be prevented (Basic settings:
FltResGoToMAN = ENABLED).
- Common alarm contacts interfacing the machinery alarm system shall be re-triggered in case of occurring
new alarm" (BO5 = Alarm flashing).

Override function
The “Sd override” (Shut-down override) function is included in default configuration on Binary input BI7.
Active Override is indicated by a " ! " mark on the display and on Binary output BO4 Common SdOvr.

The default Override function blocks all protections except the Overspeed, Emergency stop and all Analog or
Binary protections configured as SD Override. It is strongly recommended to modify names of such values to
begin with letters SDO (e.g. SDO BearingTmp for Bearing temperature).

HW note

Warning
Peripheral modules Inteli AIN8, Inteli AIN8TC and Inteli IO8/8 meet the test of Electrostatic discharge
(norm IEC 61000-4-2), but based on the condition of this norm for equipment placed in switchboard, these
modules were not tested of Electrostatic discarge.
Sign ESD must be placed inside switchboard.

Some controllers and accessories contain varistors in power supply modul for increased endurance against
surges and interference.
