GENERAL INFORMATION:
MBA students who have completed all (or most) of their 1st-year required courses may choose
to undertake an MBA6995-Internship. Students may use an Internship as either a 2nd-year
elective course or as a 2nd-year required course (in place of MBA6903-Applied Integrative
Studies). However, students are not required to do an Internship in order to graduate. It is their
choice.
If you have employment related questions or need help with your resume or cover letter, take
advantage of the free service at UNB’s Career Development & Employment Centre:

Email: employment@unb.ca; Phone 506-453-4620; Location: Neville Homestead, 58 MacKay
Students may seek out their own placement and make their own arrangements with the
company of their choice (paid or unpaid, etc.). Internships may be completed locally or in
other provinces/countries. 400 hours of work are required, to be completed within one
academic term. Students often complete an internship during the summer months when MBA
course selection is limited. The placement (is not usually but) may be with a company for
which the student has previously worked (or is currently working). However, the work/position
itself must primarily involve duties and responsibilities that the student has never done before.
It is a requirement that the student challenge himself/herself with new experiences. Students
must have the Internship approved by the Director of Graduate Studies (DOGS) BEFORE
beginning the work itself.
If you choose to undertake an Internship, you need an assigned Workplace Supervisor. You
also need to approach a Faculty member within the appropriate area group to obtain their
commitment to supervise your Internship. It is recommended that you provide the Faculty
member with a couple paragraphs of a ‘proposal’ so that your intentions are documented, and
submit that proposal with your signed registration form. At the end of the Internship, you
submit a Final Report which the Faculty Supervisor grades as Pass/Fail. Before the Faculty
Supervisor submits your final grade, the MBA Office must receive a copy of your Final
Report. Generally, the company receives a copy as well. Upon successful completion, you
receive 3ch as a ‘CR’ on your UNB transcript.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FINAL REPORT:
As a 3ch-course, the Internship Final Report requires an academic effort comparable to that of
an Independent Study course. The following are required from the student Intern:
A rigorous academic paper on the issues related to the tasks performed. The written paper
should follow the format below:
An executive summary which contains a discussion of the institution and the position
held, tasks performed and some comments on their respective importance;
i. Definition and description of the management problem;
ii. A literature review related to the problem;
iii. An analysis of the management problem identified in the organization which the
student felt contributed to their learning experience; and
iv. A conclusion section which will recommend solutions to the problem identified
based on the literature review and the student's experience in the organization.
During their Internship, students should record and analyze their observations about the
management problem of interest in order to facilitate the preparation of the Internship Report.
The Internship Report is due within three weeks after the completion of the Internship period.
