Environmental Sustainability: Impact of Construction Activities

As a student of civil engineering, I am aware of the demand on the civil

construction industry to improve the sustainability of its building practices by ensuring
that they are in line with long-term economic, social, and environmental goals.

The primary environmental effects of building activities are resource

consumption, such as the use of water, energy, and fuel, and waste production, as
shown in Table 1. Others include noise pollution, ecosystem degradation, air pollution
caused by unpleasant odors from heavy equipment and cars powered by diesel, and air
pollution caused by dust from construction operations.

The effects on biodiversity, soil change, and the production of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) as a result of vehicle movements and construction-related
machinery use have the least influence. The SD values also show that respondents'
assessments of the criteria are in line with one another.

As result, many different parties must work together to reduce the environmental
effects of construction. Many international construction businesses are taking the
initiative to develop, evaluate, and enforce their standards for limiting the environmental
implications of construction projects while lawmakers attempt to implement rules
surrounding construction waste management and sustainable construction projects.
