Abstract

Due to the globalization these days, effective cross-cultural communication and

competence are more important than ever before. As foreign language students, we are
more aware of that. Fortunately, this term we have the chance to take the Intercultural
Communication and Conflict Resolution course. The following are specific reflections
of group 7 on the process of learning Intercultural Communication and Conflict
Resolution.

I. GROUP EXPERIENCE WHEN WORKING IN GROUP

1. Word game
Our group is the 6th group to present the word game, so we were under pressure.
Because the previous groups did so well and received numerous compliments from the
teacher. That's why we had a group meeting on Zoom to discuss and finally, we found a
very interesting solution, which is to organize a word game that includes guessing the
word by images and some gap-filling to reduce the difficulty of the game.
Squid Game is now the most popular series so we choose to create a PowerPoint
template, based on the film to catch the attention of the whole class. Fortunately, our
Word game had success beyond expectations when our classmates, as well as our teacher,
participated enthusiastically, actively deduced to come up with the answers. We were
very happy because the word game not only helped the class to review the old lesson but
also brought laughter to start a new lesson.
2. Open house
In the the first place, we wondered a lot when choosing an Open House topic that
is not too complicated to complete but also interesting and unique. After considering Mrs.
Thuy Linh's suggestion, group 7 decided to choose the topic "Comparing French and
Vietnamese kisses”. Our group quickly distributed work to each member: My and Thuy
Quynh took charge of editing video and designing, Thuy Anh who has a good voice was
in charge of dubbing and Nhu Quynh, Thu Hoai, Bao Tram wrote the content.
When searching for information and writing content, we had a lot of ideas because
it’s a very intriguing and quite "hot" topic. So, we had a lot of motivation to finish the
final product: a video and some accompanying posters, and we felt quite proud and
satisfied with our own work.
The open house's exhibition day surprised us a lot. The final products of each
group were very well-made and creative, not only eye-catching but also informative.
After this project, we learned a lot from our friends and realized that we should try even
better in the next project.
3. Final project presentation
A presentation is a necessary and very important part of any course. Our group's
presentation was shared equally among the members: Thuy Quynh and My made slides,
the rest of the members looked for information and pictures. During the presentation, each
member did their own part very well, maybe because we practiced the presentation
together before the presentation day and received suggestions from the teacher and
classmates.
Our teamwork is so effective, we can also expand our circle of friends, exchange
more and talk more. With each person, we were exposed to a different way of working,
thinking and learned a lot from the team members.

III. EVALUATION OF THE COURSE AND SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR

REMEDIATION EXIST
1. Personal evaluation
a. Strength
- The course content is appropriate, easy to understand, accessible and practical meaning to
learners.
- The course provides useful and interesting information about the cultures of many
countries around the world.
- Diverse and rich learning materials.
- The syllabus is detailed and informative.
- The lecturer is highly qualified and impart knowledge in an easy-to-understand way.
What makes us most grateful is the passion, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness of the
teacher who helps us a lot in the learning process, especially in completing our group
project in the best way.
- The novelty of the teaching of the subject. If in most other general subjects, the classes
will only be filled with dry theories, in this subject, we will be exposed to knowledge in a
completely new way.
- The class members are very friendly and clever.
- There are many activities to increase the interest of learners (Open house, Word Game,
…).
- The scoring assessment is appropriate, allowing students to be creative.
- Help improve our communication, presentation teamwork skills and English skills.
b. Weakness
- Because of online learning, the actual interaction is reduced, and we do not have the
opportunity to try practical intercultural situations (not the weakness of the course, just
objective reason).
- The course duration is a bit short but knowledge of culture in communication is varied.
So, the subject will not be able to cover all new cultural issues.
c. Reflected experiences
We had a very enjoyable experience with this course.
First, in terms of knowledge, through this course we have had a broader view of
intercultural communication (understanding the main concepts of intercultural
communication, the role of intercultural communication, intercultural communication
process, ...). For example, we learned about addressing terms, table manners, giving and
responding to compliments in different cultures, …
Besides, the process of studying this subject also gives us new and interesting
experiences when learning about the specific cultural characteristics of a certain country
through Open house and final presentations. In particular, Word game and Open House
activities have allowed us to open our eyes about the creativity as well as the technology
ability of the classmates. We have learned to improve our skills by working in groups,
learn how to search for information, presentation skills, designing slides and editing video
skills through the course. And impossible to mention the great teamwork experience with
group 7. All members are very active, creative, and responsible, so we had such an
effective teamwork.
Although in the process of studying, we might have not shown the best, from there
we can draw experiences and useful lessons. We hope we will become more and more
perfect to be our best version.
We think we had a successful course. If taken offline, perhaps the course will be
more successful.
2. Some suggestions for remediation exist
- If possible, increase the school week length.
- Attendance should be done at the end or mid-session to avoid student truant.
- Students can be asked to turn on the camera during the learning process to control
the quality of their learning.

IV. CONCLUSION

The report detailed our team’s experience with the Intercultural Communication and
Conflict Resolution course, as well as reflected our problems. Through the learning
process, we have understood basically what exactly intercultural communication is, the
role of intercultural communication in social and workplace situation, as well as how to
put it into effect in daily life. At the same time, the course also gives us the opportunity to
read and participate in real-life situations between cultures to experience potential
conflicts, from which to derive successful communication strategies in life and work.

Finally, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh
for being with us throughout this course!
