OPERATION OF ANTI-ROLL TANK ON THE TRIPLE-E CLASS

Manufacturer: Hoppe Marine®

Capacity: 4,347 m3

INTRODUCTION

The anti-roll tank is located below the accommodation block between frames 105-119. The anti-roll
tank is a roll damping system made up by a passive free-surface tank. By adjusting the filling level
of the tank, the natural response period of the tank can be adapted to the GM/roll period of the ship
depending on loading condition. The system includes a filling level sensor, a roll period indicating
system and a system to monitor the ship motions and control the ART to assist the crew in achieving
the most effective roll reduction.

OPERATION

Prior to departure

Prior to departure the anti-roll tank should be filled with water to a level corresponding to the
transverse metacentric height of the vessel without free surface correction of any tanks (this is the
solid GM or GMsolid). Please refer to Figure 1. The correct filling level is determined as follows:

1. After loading is completed, note the value of the GMsolid from LOADSTAR. If the anti-roll tank is
empty, assume a filling level of 4.4 m.
2. Check whether the GMsolid is equal or higher than 7.5 meters. If this is the case, continue with
step 4).
3. If the GMsolid is less than 7.5 meters, refer to Figure 1 to obtain the correct filling level. Then re-
calculate GMsolid with the obtained filling level. Refer again to Figure 1 and check whether GMsolid
is within the indicated range of GMsolid. If the GMsolid should fall on the dividing line between two
operational filling levels, use the higher filling level.
4. Check whether the corrected GM including the free surface correction of all tanks (including the
anti-roll tank filled to the corresponding filling level) is above all minimum stability requirements.
If operating parameters are acceptable fill the anti-roll tank to the correct filling level referring to
Figure 1.
5. The anti-roll tank should be emptied if the GMsolid is below 2.35 meters.
6. For GMsolid above 9.0 m the anti-roll tank loses its roll damping effect. Hence, it can either be
emptied or the water level can be kept at 4.4 m in order to give a reduction of the GM value. If
desirable, the anti-roll tank can also be filled completely to the full level of 7.5 m, but to avoid
sloshing it should not be filled to an intermediate level between 4.4 m and 7.5 m.

At sea

 The tank level/roll period indication system constantly monitors the operational conditions and
will automatically alarm to alert the crew if any adjustment of the system is required.
 In case of emergency, vessel’s stability must be considered. If necessary the tank can be emptied
by operating the quick discharge dump valves from the control panel.

In port

During cargo operations, the anti-roll tank does not need to be emptied.

Filling level

Between 2.35 to 3.9 1.6
Between 3.9 to 5.8 2.7
Between 5.8 to 7.5 3.3
Higher than 7.5 4.4
