DRAWING ANIMALS AND PROPS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

This lesson includes principles and concept of animation, materials and equipment to be used for
animation and the technique in drawing basic animals and props.

How to Draw Animals and Props?

When creating a cartoon character, an animator should consider its own shape, personality
and attributes. Starting from their facial expressions to bodies, this series is an ideal one for those
wanting to get started with drawing animals and props.

1. Create a Base. Use of rough sketches beforehand. This will provide you with the perfect
direction of style and nature of your character. Starting from drawing the basic shape of the
figure and then adding features and other details of the body. This procedure should be
followed regardless of your character, an animal or even an object that you want to bring to
life. You also have to define the character’s expressions and movement. This is just a draft
but at the end of this process, you need to refine it so the result will please you completely.
2. Proportion is the most important factor to consider
in constructing a character. The artist should keep in
mind the correct size of body parts because it will
define the structural features of our characters.
Using basic shape like oval will help you to measure
the height of the character.
3. Basic Shape Body. Common practice to draw or
build a body format, you can use a pear shape or
round shape. This is a common technique to maintain
the correct proportions of a character.
4. Adding Skeleton. We need to define a simple
skeleton structure because it will serve as a guide
in relation to the character's joints, such as elbows
and knees. If you draw any kind of character in a
cartoon style, you need to understand the main
differences in muscles and bones among different
cartoon categories, such as cats, birds and
humans.

5. The Goofy Character. The "goofy character" is one who walks on two legs (even the
animals) and looks silly, clumsy and, generally, lazy.
There is a template to be followed in such cartoon
characters - although not a definitive rule, and may be
changed to suit the nature of each character:
 Thinner heads;
 Big noses (or snout, if an animal);
 Big teeth;
 Small shoulders;
 Virtually no chin;
 Using basic shapes.
