Introductory Message
Welcome to Science 10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD).
This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and
responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to
12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Science 10 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner.
This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Science 10 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform
the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explain the effects of EM radiation on living things and the environment.

(S10FE-IIe-f-49)

II. Background Information for Learners

How’s your experience in today’s modality of learning? How will you

compare your exposure to gadgets like cell phones and laptops before and
during the pandemic? Did you know that cell phones emit low levels of non-
ionizing radiation referred to as radio frequency (RF) energy? Do you think
frequent exposures to low level radiation has an accompanying health
hazard in humans?

Generally, the effect of radiation on living things depends on the

amount of energy it carries. Find out what type of EM radiations pose health
risk on living things and the environment.

Activity 1

Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiations

The universe has many kinds of energy. One of which is the radiant
enegy produced by nuclear reactions at the core of the sun. It is the most
familiar form of radiation.
Radiation is defined as energy emitted from one source and
transmitted to another body or source through a medium or space.
Electromagnetic radiation is just one of the different kinds of radiation.

1
There are two classifications of radiation. Ionizing radiation is
characteristized with shorter wavelength, higher frequency, and higher
energy. It has a frequency of 3 x 1016 𝐻𝑧 and above. Non-ionizing radiation
is characterized with longer wavelength, lower frequency, and lower energy.
The frequency range for this is from 3x109 Hz to 3x1016 Hz.

Study Table 1 and classify the EM waves as ionizing and non-ionizing

radiation based on their wavelength, frequency and energy. Copy and fill out
Table 2 for your answer.

Table 1. The electromagnetic waves’ wavelengths, frequencies, and energies

EM Wave Wavelength (m) Frequency (Hz) Energy (J)
Radio > 1 x 10−1 <3 x 109 <2 x 10−24
Microwave 1 x 10−3 − 1 x 10−1 3 x 109 − 3 x 1011 2 x 10−24 − 2 x 10−22
Infrared 7 x 10−7 − 1 x 10−3 3 x 1011 − 4 x 1014 2 x 10−22 − 3 x 10−19
Visible 4 x 10−7 − 7 x 10−7 4 x 1014 − 7.5 x 1014 3 x 10−19 − 5 x 10−19
UV 1 x 10−8 − 4 x 10−7 7.5 x 1014 − 3 x 1016 5 x 10−19 − 2 x 10−17
X-ray 1 x 10−11 − 1 x 10−8 3 x 1016 − 3 x 1019 2 x 10−17 − 2 x 10−14
Gamma-ray <1 x 10−11 > 3 x 1019 > 2 x 10−14

Activity 2
Effects of EM Radiation

Life on earth has evolved and developed with an ever-present

background radiation. In fact, both solar and nuclear radiations have always
been there. In generating electricity in nuclear power plant, ionizing
radiation is produced.

Ionizing radiation can create electrically charged ions in the materials

exposed to that matter. This process is known as ionization which can break
atoms and molecules apart. Apparently, this will cause severe damage in
living organisms. In the previous activity you have learned that ionizing
radiation in the form of EM wave include the x-ray and the gamma ray.
X-rays are dangerous because they can penetrate the flesh can
damage healthy living cells of the body, hence, frequent exposure to X-rays
should be avoided. Too much exposure from it can damage body tissues and
cause cancer.
Gamma rays on the other hand carry the highest amount of energy,
thus, they are more dangerous. Gamma rays are emitted by stars, including
the sun and some radioactive substances. They can only be blocked with

2
lead and concrete. They are very strong that they can kill living cells.
Although gamma rays are used to treat cancers, they are given to patients at
below lethal dose just to target the cancer cells and not the whole body.
Non-ionizing radiation’s effect to humans is generally limited to thermal
damage. This is in the case of UV radiation which is also clinically link to
skin cancer.

If you have access to internet you may vist the link below for more
information about ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

Now that you understand the kinds and effects of EM radiation, answer the
following questions.

1. What kind of radiation is more dangerous and harmful to humans? Why?

___________________________________________________________________________

2. How will you describe harmful EM radiation in terms of its frequency,

wavelength and energy?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

3. Between visible light and ultraviolet (UV) light, which one poses higher
health
risk? What will possibly result if your body is exposed to too much of it?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

4. What are the things would you do if you are frequently exposed to the
heat of the sun?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

5. Recall the applications and uses of each type of EM wave. What do you
think is/are the EM radiation you are exposed to at home and in the
community? What radiation do you think poses the greatest health hazard
to you and your family?

radiation?

Activity 2
1. Ionizing radiation is more dangerous and harmful to humans as compared to non-
ionizing radiation. This is because ionization process takes place in
materials/body exposed to ionizing radiation. In this case atoms and molecules
break apart causing severe damage to the cells of living organisms.
2. Harmful ionizing radiations which are X-rays and Gamma-rays have higher
frequencies, higher energies and shorter wavelengths.
3. UV light poses higher health risk compared to visible light due to its higher energy.
Too much sun exposure will eventually lead to skin cancer.
4. Answer may vary. Possible answer:
Almost everyday but I make sure that I am protecting myself from its ray to
minimize skin damage. Using umbrella and Lotions with SPF will help block the
sunlight striking directly to my skin.
5. Answer may vary. Possible answer:
EM radiation like radio frequency emitted from cellphones, microwave from
microwave oven, radio waves from TV and radio, and UV radiation from sunlight.
The UV radiation has the highest health risk due to its high energy considering
that next to it is X-ray which is an ionizing radiation.
Reflection:
Answer may vary. Possible answer:
1. EM radiation is practically useful in our daily lives but with it corresponding
dangers, we should also be careful.
2. Being aware of the radiation and its effects, one must limit exposure time,
maintain long distance from the source if possible, and use protective measures to
minimize its effect.
