Course description
Critical reading of cross-cultural, post-colonial, feminist, and queer fiction, analysis of construction of
identities from different ideological contexts (race, nationality, religion, social class, and gender);
evaluating literary works from inclusive perspectives on the mentioned issues
Course learning outcomes
1. Identify linguistic and literary conventions used in the representation of others
2. Express awareness of cultural and social differences reflected in world literature
3. Analyze literary texts collaboratively by using online technology
4. Critically apply literary theories in the analysis of texts
5. Relate literary representations of the others to their actual lives and real-world setting

Description of assignments for the first half of the course (50%)

1. Participation (10%)
Regular attendance and active engagement in classroom activities are expected. 5% of the participation
score is based on social annotation (online commenting of the reading assignments).
2. Online Quizzes (08%)
There are two online quizzes (held in class in Weeks 3 & 5). Students are expected to be able to identify
literary conventions and theories about the representation of others.
3. Group presentations (08%)
Each week one group of students will give a presentation about a topic related to the class reading text.
These presentations will provide background information (context) to assist the whole class when reading
the text assigned for the following week.
4. Written assignments (08%)
Two short individual writing assignments (due in Weeks 5 & 7), which can be considered as stepping
stones towards the term paper, allowing students to practice and receive feedback on their critical
responses to the literary texts.
5. Term paper (16%)
Students will be given a choice of topics based on the literature studies in class one week before midterm.
Students are expected to be able to express awareness of cultural and social differences reflected in world
literature, critically apply literary theories in the analysis of texts, and relate literary representations of the
others to their actual lives and real-world setting in grammatically correct English. All sources used need
to be referenced properly. Copying or paraphrasing sources without mention will be considered
plagiarism.
