Pattern of Development in Writing: Cause and Effect

Topic: Poverty

The Growing Disparity

Poverty is one of the major societal and economic problems that the world has
been facing since the dawn of civilization. It is an important discussion on the issue of
social divide. It is defined as the absence of minimum and food and shelter necessary
for living, known as absolute poverty. In the Philippines in particular, the issue on
poverty has been a topic of discussion since time immemorial. Great inequalities are
growing across socio-economic classes. Key factors such as the unmanaged population
growth, poorly managed economy, corruption in the government, among others, are
constraining efforts to reduce poverty.
In the Philippines, the main cause of poverty is the poorly managed economy
which has experienced low to moderate growth for the past 40 years, slowed further by
the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic which has caused massive unemployment
and a major economic depression as stores shut down, mobility greatly limited and
travel widely restricted. Another major cause of poverty in the country is the unmanaged
growth of the population which has made our resources even more scarce. The failure
to develop the agriculture sector also further the widespread effects of poverty, and
further highlights the growing disparity between the rich and the poor.
As the higher socioeconomic levels attain more wealth and exploit resources, the
marginalized sectors are the ones suffering from the dire effects of poverty. Due to the
growing poverty in the Philippines, many Filipinos are unable to afford basic necessities
such as food and shelter. Malnutrition is one of the extreme effects of poverty in the
Philippines. There are several stories of Filipinos having to survive on extremely limited
and unhealthy food in order to survive. Rice, which is regarded as one of the staple
foods in our country has been scarce and replaced with unhealthy alternatives such as
instant noodles which is more affordable. This puts the country in an even worse state
of health. Another issue is housing. Due to extreme poverty, many Filipinos are unable
to afford decent housing which endangers them to live on the sidewalks and make
makeshift living accommodations. This puts them at risk of exposure to natural
phenomena such as extreme heat and rain. The extreme case of poverty has also
cause people to resort to crime in order to survive and thus, increasing the crime rate in
the country. For some people who just need to survive, stealing could be seen as the
only option, especially because of severe unemployment.
The effects of poverty, especially in developing countries such as the Philippines
has been far and wide and affects millions of people. This problem has been plaguing
the country since the beginning but with adequate government support and cooperation,
and proper economic planning, it is not impossible to reduce, or even eliminate. The

growing disparity between the rich and the poor is a clear manifestation of this growing
problem. However, if we all work together, nothing is impossible.
