Du Bois theory of ‘double The theory describes that it is the internal conflicts experienced by
consciousness’ subordinated groups in an oppressive society. In the film ‘Get Out’ by
Jordan Peele, the theory can be shown in various instances for example
when Chris is about to be performed on an operation so that Hudson
can “get his eyes” and in the process, hypnosis was involved which led
Chris’ mind to travel to “The Sunken Place” making him to be in a state
of paralysis as the mind is pushed back to be like a spectator but one
cannot do anything. The same scenario happened to Logan or formally
known as Andre. The black mind is not seen as equal, evidenced by
when Jeremy wanted to spar with Chris but before he had told him that
jiu-jitsu is not about strength but about the mind and strategy thus
wanting to show that his mind was more superior than Chris’. Also Mr.
Dean as he was telling the story about how his father was defeated by a
black man in a race he said he never lived that down showing how the
black race had been inferiorized.

Baldwin’s Concepts One of Baldwin’s concepts was that man was supposed to accept reality
knowing that visible reality hides a deeper meaning. In the film ‘Get
Out’, Chris accepted that Rose was also part of the plan the family had
for him and regardless of his love for her, he had to accept the truth and
think on how to save himself. Also Baldwin stated that man need not
take anything for granted and this is seen by Chris together with his
friend Rob the way they were so eager to find answers on what was
happening in the Armitage house. Baldwin also talks about the barrier
between one’s knowledge of oneself and oneself is high which can be
supported by the way Logan/Andre handled himself after the camera
flash causing him to panic.
Lived experience Racism and colorism is a common thing in the society as it can be noted
in the behavioral characteristics one has for you. One experience is
whereby I was suspected to have stolen one of my classmates Bluetooth
hearing devices and without any evidence I was rushed to the
authorities and without much discussion I was booked a session with
the school disciplinary council and my parents were to be informed on
what went down. The meeting was booked for the next day and I had to
come with my parents and after meeting with the council and the
frustrations that were in my path, the school gave me a suspension of
which I knew after the break I was given I would have it rough when I
came back and so my parents suggested for a transfer instead. That is
the story of racial profiling in my life.

Summary: brief breakdown of the notes from the right column which includes an analysis of what you
read and your own ideas about the points made. The summary must be at least three or more sentences.
Jordan Peele using his film ‘Get Out’ is trying to show us racism using imagery and foreshadowing
which has become an issue in the modern society. One can’t be oppressed due to one’s God given skin
complexion which can’t be solved in any way possible. Chris in the film is seen to be a proud African-
American or as Baldwin would term as an artist. Also Du Bois is trying to educate the world in his
theory and the poems trying to show that no matter the complexion, all are equals and as the film ends it
shows that there is no prosperity in racism and that everyone to accept the visible reality and leave with
each other as they are no matter the race.
