The Cloth of Emperors

Kings and princes have used it to make their clothes and decorate their houses
for hundreds of years. And it is made by a tiny caterpillar. What is it? It is silk,
an ancient material which came from China and has been woven into rugs,
clothes, tapestries and decorations of all kinds for close to 4 000 years. It is a
rich, soft, shining cloth, lovely to wear and beautiful to see. 5

Silk is a natural material made from tiny threads that are squeezed out as a
liquid from the body of the silkworm. The silkworm is not really a worm at all
but a caterpillar (a larva of the silkmoth). The liquid silk comes out of its body
at about 30 centimetres a minute and it hardens when it touches the air. It is
what the caterpillar uses to form a cocoon. 10

The Chinese knew how to feed the silkworms on the leaves of the mulberry
tree. They knew how to pluck, chop and prepare the mulberry leaves so the
greedy silkworms would eat them. They knew what things to do so that the
worms would spin threads of the finest silk.

The Chinese guarded the secret of how to raise the silkworm for a long time. 15
By law of the emperor, anyone who disclosed the secret would be tortured to
death.

How a Battery Works

It is possible to discover a lot about electricity using small batteries and bulbs.
Batteries are useful because they are small enough to be carried from place to
place. The first battery was made by an Italian scientist, Alessandro Volta. He
discovered that some metals and a liquid could work together to produce
electricity. He used salt water in his battery. 5

These days, the case of a battery can be made of zinc metal. This is often
covered with plastic or tin to prevent the battery from leaking. There is a
carbon rod (like a thick pencil lead) in the middle of the battery. The battery
case is not filled with salt water because this would leak out. Instead, there is a
chemical paste between the carbon and the zinc case. 10

The chemicals in the battery make electricity. As the electricity is taken from
the battery, the chemicals are slowly used up. Eventually, the battery cannot
make electricity any more. Some batteries, such as those used in cars, can be
recharged so they go on working for longer.

8 (a) Why is a battery covered with plastic or tin?

(b) What replaced salt water in batteries?
