Anatomy of Type
1. Ascender line: A imaginary line between base line and the top of the ascender
2. Cap line: It place between the base line and the top for a capital letter such as H or M
4. Ascender: It’s an upward part of a letterform such as d or b above the x-height and
above the cap line
5. Baseline: It’s an imaginary line upon which a line of text rests such as g or j, which
most letters sit and below descender extend
6. Descender: It’s opposite with ascender. It’s a downward portion of letter that extends
below the baseline of a font
7. Stress: It’s the thickening of curved strokes. It’s usually either diagonal or vertical.
9. Arm and leg: Arm, a secondary stroke that extends diagonally or horizontally from
the top and the does not connect to another stroke. Leg are the lower angled strokes
for example K or R
10. Ear: It’s a decorative flourish usually on the upper right side of the bowl such g
11. Crossbar and cross stroke: A crossbar are a bar the crosses between two other strokes
such as A.
12. Loop: It’s the enclosed or partially enclosed counter below the baseline that is
connected to the bowl by a link.
13. Link: It’s usually curved stroke that connects the bowl and the loop such as g
14. Tail: It’s the descending decorative stroke on the letter Q or descending
16. Eye: It’s an enclosed space in lowercase e, it’s also much like a counter
