I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of the
a. three main categories of rocks; and
b. origin and environment of formation of common minerals and rocks.
B. Performance The learners should be able to conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic/hydrometeorological
Standards hazards that your community may experience.
C. Learning The learners should be able to…
LC:
Competencies/ Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

each Specific Objective: The student should be able to;
At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:
a. identify the three types of rocks;
b. classify rocks as to igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks; and
c. appreciate the importance of rocks in our daily life.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson
or presenting the new
lesson (ELICIT)
B. Establishing a purpose for What’s new?
the lesson (ENGAGE)  The learners will answer the activity indicated in the module.
- Word Cryptogram: Learners will unscramble the letters by placing the correct letter
sequence in the shaded box. Then they will use number boxes to complete the answers to
the given riddle.
(see LM p. 46)
C. Presenting What’s in?
examples/instances of the  The learners will read the paragraph that introduce preliminary concept about the properties
new lesson (ENGAGE) exhibited by rocks. (LM p. 45)

D. Discussing new concepts What is it?

and practicing new skills  The learners will be provided with readings about the three types of rocks. (LM p.47-49)
#1 (EXPLORE)  Pictures of different rocks will be presented to the learners and they will identify each rock as
igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic based on their readings. (LM p. 49)
 The learners will also be asked to collect at least 5 rock samples in their place and will describe
the characteristics of each rock depending on their appearance, texture, color, and layers (or
bands). Then they will classify the types of rocks.
Sample:

Type of Rock: ____________________

Description: ______________________
Importance: ___________________________________

E. Discussing new concepts What’s more?

and practicing new skills The learners will do/perform the activities indicated in the module. This activity includes the
following:
#2 (EXPLORE)
Understanding Science Words
The learners will complete the crossword puzzle that refers to the terms about the characteristics
and different types of rocks. (LM p. 51)
What I can do?
The learners will do the task identified in the module. These tasks include:
Listing of suggestions on how they can promote the sustainable development in utilizing the
different rock resources.
Doing a research on three rocks of different types (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) and
they will state the respective economic and medical significance in the present society.
(See LM p. 53)

 They will do the activity on pages 56-57of the module.
a. Completing the concept map on the types of rock.
Completing the diagram on the rock cycle.
G. Finding practical What I have learned?
applications of concepts  In formulating bits of information reflective of what they have learned during the Development
and skills in daily living and Engagement phases, the learners will fill in the table by providing basic information about
the types of rocks.
