Human beings have long known how colors a ect their lives. Take ancient Egyp ans, for

visi ng teams felt angry and complained that they had not been treated fairly. As a result, a new
rule now states that both sides’ locker rooms must be painted the same color for the fairness of
the game.
If a person wants to create a room for social purposes, pain ng the walls yellow would be a
great idea. This is because yellow can make a room brighter and bring people happiness. In

IV. Reading Comprehension

We humans may need our eight hours of sleep a night to keep our brains func oning, but
that's not the only dura on, or reason, why animals sleep. Bats sleep for 20 hours a day while
gira es snooze for less than two hours a day. While humans completely fall asleep, oblivious to
the world, other animals like some whales and seals, shut o only por ons of their brain at a
me, keeping the other half ac ve for such important func ons as staying at the surface for
breathing.
Why is there such variety in the animal kingdom? It's something scien sts have been
pondering for a long me. It seems that sleep may serve di erent func ons for di erent animals,
which is why there are such wildly di erent sleep dura ons and ways of sleeping, depending on
many factors for each species.
Some female fruit ies only sleep about 70 minutes a day and live just as long as other les
even if they're deprived of sleep. Some migratory birds can adjust how much sleep they need
depending on the season, ge ng by with much less sleep during migra on season than at other
mes of the year. Meanwhile, carnivores have the luxury of sleeping more hours in the day than
herbivores, which are generally prey species constantly on the lookout for carnivores. Most
mammal infants sleep much of the me during their rst few weeks and months of life, yet baby
dolphins don't sleep at all in their rst few months. This shows that while sleep is important for
cogni ve func on for some species, it may not be why sleep is vital to other species.

34. This ar cle is about _________ among di erent animal species.

(A)the inner workings and purpose of sleep
(B)the similari es and di erences of sleep
(C)the pros and cons of sleep
(D)the rumors and mysteries of sleep

35. According to this ar cle, which of the following statements about animal sleep is TRUE?
(A)Animals’ sleep dura on and ways of sleeping are similar.
(B)Sleep is a must for mammals, especially for their babies.
(C)Female fruit ies that sleep less live a shorter life than other ies.
(D)Humans need 8 hours of sleep for the sake of brain.

36. According to the ar cle, which of the animals sleep the least?
(A)lion (B) a bear (C) a gira e (D) a leopard

37. If an animal is always on the outlook for its predators, the animal is very ______.

Consider a sixteen-year-old so embarrassed that she has a huge pimple on her nose. She is
posi ve that the en re school is thinking and murmuring about some ny incident which in truth
hardly anyone no ced. Psychologists have a name for the condi on –
“imaginary audience.” And it comes from the unrealis c view that we are the center of the
universe and everything that people say or do is somehow a response to us. It feeds into feelings
of social anxiety and depression, it actually comes from an odd sense of self-importance and self-
centeredness. We exaggerate the importance of our ego and over-emphasize the success of our
performance. When we link our imperfect performance or setbacks to the value of ourselves, we
cause ourselves huge mental burdens. Self-centeredness and imaginary audience therefore bring
self-scru ny, cri cism and even shame.
In order to x the issue and decrease social anxiety, some suggest boos ng self-esteem,
which means raising con dence. However, a study indicates that unrealis c con dence leads to
depression and tense interpersonal rela onship. Instead, the e ec ve way is to face each
challenge objec vely. When we look at ourselves from our aspect, we have a narrow view with
exaggera on of our emo ons. If we take it from the audience’s perspec ve, which is the third-
person’s view, we get a bigger picture of the event with ra onal judgments. We could
