Optigard™ Cockroach Bait (A15276C)

Product Information
General Information
 Optigard™ Cockroach Bait is a food grade matrix designed to be palatable to cockroaches
for extended periods after deployment, containing the insecticide Emamectin benzoate.
 Emamectin benzoate is a mectin insecticide, derived from a compound Isolated from
fermentation of Streptomyces avermitilis, a naturally occurring soil Actinomycete.

 Optigard™ Cockroach Bait may be used as a spot or crack and crevice treatment for the
indoor and outdoor (adjacent to homes and structures) control of cockroaches in residential
areas and the non-food/non-feed areas of institutional, warehousing and commercial
establishments, including warehouses, restaurants, food processing plants, supermarkets,
hospitals, nursing homes, motels, hotels, schools, laboratories, computer facilities, sewers,
aircraft, buses, boats/ships, trains, animal housing facilities, pet shops and zoos. Non-
food/non-feed areas are areas such as garbage rooms, lavatories, entries, and vestibules,
offices, locker rooms, machine rooms, boiler rooms, garages, mop closets and storage
(after canning or bottling).

This product may also be used in food/feed areas of food/feed handling establishments as
outlined below.

Mode of Action
 The active ingredient in Optigard™ Cockroach Bait, Emamecting benzoate, stimulates the
release of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the insect, which is an inhibitory
neurotransmitter, leading to paralysis and death.
 Cockroaches are attracted to the highly palatable bait matrix, which, on consumption
delivers an insecticidal dose of Emamectin benzoate. Cockroaches that feed on the bait will
return to their harborage where the active ingredient may be passed to other cockroaches,
including nymphs that do not actively forage for food. Thus a lager number of cockroaches
than those originally feeding on the bait are controlled.

Spectrum of Activity
 Optigard™ Cockroach Bait is intended for control of cockroach pest species, including but
not limited to:
o German cockroach Blattella germanica
o American cockroach Periplaneta americana
o Australian cockroach P. australasiae
o Oriental cockroach Blatta orientalis
o Brownbanded cockroach Supella longipalpa
o Smokeybrown cockroach P. fuliginosa
o Brown cockroach P. brunnea

Directions for Use

Place Product out of reach of children.
Always follow the instructions for use on the label.

Bait Application

This product can be applied as a crack and crevice treatment using a syringe applicator or a
bait injector. Application rate is dependent on level of infestation and species to be controlled.
Optigard™ Cockroach Bait should be applied to areas frequented by cockroaches. For light
infestations of cockroaches, 1 – 2 bait points are recommended per square meter of treatment

2
Optigard™ Cockroach Bait (A15276C)

area. For heavy infestations of cockroaches or for control of larger cockroaches, 2 – 5 bait
points are recommended per square meter of treatment area.

Each bait point should equal approximately 0.25 to 0.50 grams of product. A spot
approximately 3 mm in diameter equals 0.25 grams of product, while a spot approximately 6
mm equals 0.50 grams of product. Bait may also be applied as a bead approximately 0.3 mm
thick and approximately 5 cm long. Bait placements should be at or near harborage or
aggregation areas, such as corners, areas where cockroaches forage or cracks and crevices.
Numerous smaller placements will provide faster control than fewer larger spots, especially for
German cockroaches.

Indoor Use
Place bait into cracks and crevices: holes, pipe chases, undersides of furniture, under drain
plates, in or under trash containers, hidden surfaces around sinks and storage areas, behind
baseboards, around doors and windows, inside, behind and under cabinets, drawers and
shelving, under and behind appliances such as refrigerators and stoves, and in attics and crawl
spaces. Also apply in points between different elements of construction, between equipment
and floors, openings leading to voids and hollow spaces in walls, equipment legs and bases
and crawl spaces where insects hide.

During follow-up visits, inspect bait placements and reapply when necessary.

Do not treat food preparation surfaces. This product may be used in conjunction with a non-
repellent insecticide or with an insect growth regulator. Allow sprays to dry before applying bait.
Avoid application of bait to areas that have been recently sprayed with a repellent insecticide,
and avoid spraying insecticide over bait as it may reduce palatability of the bait.

Food/Feed Handling Establishments Use

Food/feed areas include areas for receiving, storage, packing (canning, bottling, wrapping,
boxing), preparing edible waste storage, and enclosed processing systems (mills, dairies,
edible oils, syrups). Serving areas are also considered a food/feed area when food is exposed
and facility is in operation.

Application within food/feed areas of food/feed handling establishments is limited

to crack and crevice treatment only.
If bait contacts an exposed surface where food is handled, remove bait and wash exposed
surface with an effective cleaning compound followed by a potable water rinse prior to use.
Apply directly into cracks and crevices with syringe applicator or bait injector. Place applicator
tip into cracks, crevices, holes and other small openings where roaches may be a problem.
Apply small amounts of bait per spot. Apply bait in small amounts between different elements of
construction, between equipment and floors, openings leading into voids and hollow spaces in
floors, walls, ceilings, equipment legs and bases, around plumbing pipes, doors and windows,
behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, closets, stoves and other equipment where
cockroaches hide. During follow-up visits inspect bait placements and reapply when necessary.

Do not apply bait to areas where food/feed, utensils or processing surfaces may
become contaminated.

Use Around Home or Structure

Place bait in areas adjacent to structures where cockroaches may harbor or breed. Inject into
cracks and crevices around windows and doors, porches, screens, eaves, sills, expansion
joints, patios, garages, sewer areas, garbage holding areas, under stairways and in open crawl
spaces, basements, attics and other areas where cockroaches may be harboring or foraging.

Refillable stations:
This product may be used in refillable bait stations. Place approximately 0.5 to 5 grams of
product per station. Do not exceed 5 grams per station (up to 1 tsp.). For residential
applications, approximately 2 stations per side of a structure are suggested for an average
sized single family home. For best results, place stations adjacent to structure near: air
conditioning units, water faucets, foundation vents, and weep holes, decks, utility entryways
