Media Relations Strategy Kit: “Walk to Work Day - Skate to School” (E-waste)

Pitch Letter

Subject Line: Promoting ‘Action on e-waste’ Through Walking and Skating

Hi Jenny,

While electronic devices have been a blessing, their use has decreased physical activity and

contributed significantly to high amounts of electronic waste (e-waste) in the world. Increased

appetite for information often encourages more time in front of the television, more hours with

mobile devices on our hands, and long periods listening to music hence decreased chances of

movement. As more sophisticated devices are produced, the older ones get disposed of,

contributing to environmental pollution.

We can both agree that the general population, especially students and the working population,

needs to reduce the usage of electronic devices to prevent environmental degradation and

promote wellness. According to the Pedestrian Council of Australia, physical inactivity accounts

for increased obesity cases in Australia. Also, a 6 percent increase in obesity in the country

results from long hours of driving. Routine activities including walking and cycling provide

appropriate levels of physical activity that can prevent health problems and environmental

problems in the future.

Deakin University, in association with the Pedestrian Council of Australia, has presented an

opportunity for this action to happen by organizing the “Walk to Work-Skate to School” event

that will take place on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 7.00 am during the opening of Deakin

University Skate Park. You can dig more on this information at walk2work.com.au.

For an expert opinion on this matter, I wish to connect you with the event’s host and Olympic

Gold medallist, Keegan Palmer. Having been on the tracks for decades, Palmer has vast

knowledge on this area, and her insights can inform the general public on why they need to walk

or skate more.

Kindly let me know if you can be interested in having an exclusive interview with Palmer

regarding this event. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thanks,

Janice Felita Halim

Title: Walking or Skating Can Contribute to Wellness and E-Waste-Free Environment

Deakin University Press-(December 13, 2021)-To promote health and awareness on how to

reduce e-waste in the environment, Deakin University has organized a “Walk to Work-Skate to

School” initiative that will occur on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, between 7.00 am and 11.00 am

during the grand opening of the University’s Skate Park.

The “Walk to Work-Skate to School” event is meant to encourage the general public, especially

the working population and students, to leave their seats more and engage in physical activity if

they are to prevent health complications and environmental pollution by e-waste.

Significant health complications in Australia are attributed to physical inactivity, according to

Martin Chuzzlewitt, the President of the country’s Public Transport User’s Association. With

reference to this insight, Chuzzlewit stated that one extra hour of daily driving contributes to “a

6% increase” in the chances of developing obesity. The development of more sophisticated

4

electronic devices has led to the rapid disposal of the less functional ones. For instance, every

new feature in a mobile phone comes with a new model, meaning the earlier versions have to be

disposed of. The entertainment features on phones encourage sitting, at the expense of their

health, as people watch videos or listen to music using earphones. There is a need to get people

to their feet and have them do basic movements such as walking. The National Physical Activity

Guidelines provide the appropriate levels of exercises that include walking, cycling, or

skateboarding.

Hosted by Keegan Palmer, an Olympic Gold Medalist in track events, the event will invite the

participation of the local communities, students, Deakin University staff, and the general public

near or around the University’s State Park. Palmer recognizes and lauds the University’s role in

organizing the event, terming it as “a great investment in local vert and half-pipe skating

facilities.”

Deakin University has organized this event in association with various stakeholders, including

the Pedestrian Council of Australia, the Transport User’s Association, the Australian Hearthealth

Council, and Coffee Shack, which is the lead sponsor of the event.

The “Walk to Work-Skate to School” is an initiative conducted annually in Australia and is

usually organized by the Pedestrian Council of Australia. The event is usually aimed at

promoting the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of participants.

The Organization

The Walk to Work-Skate to School Initiative is a national movement that aims to encourage

Australians to engage more in movement, physical activity, and reduced use of electronic

devices. The initiative is backed by various stakeholders that have the interests of Australians at

heart, such as the Pedestrian Council of Australia, Public Transport Users Association,

Australian Hearthealth Council, Deakin University, professional athletes, and students, among

others. The organization also focuses on organizing social events that involve basic physical

activities that can help keep health complications at bay. It is also sponsored by Coffee Shack.

Personnel

This organization is based at Deakin University, meaning a considerable number of its personnel

come from this institution. Some notable personnel of this organization include Mary Pecksniff,

the CEO of Australian Hearthealth Council; Gloria Starbuck, the manager of Coffee Shack; Iain

Martin, the Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, Yanni Nadgett, the President of Deakin Deck

Masters, Keegan Palmer, a professional athlete, and Olympic Gold medalist, Ruth Pinch, the

owner of the Deakin University cafeteria and HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Additional

personnel include various health and fitness professionals and fitness coaches.

History

The Walk to Work-Skate to School Initiative began a few decades ago following medical reports

showing increased cases of obesity in the larger population and the negative impacts of

electronic waste. Physical inactivity has pegged the country back for years leading to ill-health

and deaths related to being physically dormant. Such outcomes led the government to

recommend basic physical fitness through the National Physical Activity Guidelines. Such

included walking, cycling, and skateboarding.

8

Facts, Figures, and Statistics

For ten years, this initiative has helped increase the number of physical activity levels by more

than 50 percent. In so doing, the reports of ill-health due to obesity and the related issues have

reduced drastically. Also, there has been a reduction of about 15 percent in the overall e-waste

collected and minimal dependence on electronic gadgets. More people have embraced walking,

cycling, and skateboarding rather than driving or using trains for short distances.

Achievements

Since its establishment, the initiative has won numerous awards, achievements, and accolades

that have attracted more sponsors to the organization. In 2012, it was recognized by being

awarded the Australian Mental Health Prize. It also bagged the Aboriginal Health award in 2015.

The organization has also attracted a lot of willing sponsors from big companies. Many

professional athletes have also recognized this initiative and have become part of it, serving in

various capacities.

Mission and Vision statement

The vision: To encourage walking and skateboarding in daily routines and minimize electronics

use to save ourselves and the environment.

Mission: We provide our populations with the right platforms, conversations, and activities that

encourage physical activities and reduce gadget dependency in order to gain wellness and live in

a healthy environment.
