agencies / institutions for conservation and preservation of natural
resources towards sustainable development.

The YES-O has the following objectives: (a)be aware and create
awareness in others of the state of the Philippine environment and
ecology, including prevailing issues and concerns relative thereto;
(b)establish specific and doable programs, projects and activities to
address issues and concerns on the environment and ecology; (c)network
with other government and non-government organizations, including
Youth for Environment in Schools (YES) Organization in other schools
within the division and region, with regard to support and assistance to
programs, projects and activities of the organization;(d)Encourage
community participation and initiative in environmental and ecological
movements and actions; and (d)develop among members and the
community proper environmental values, skills and attitudes.
The Youth for Environment in schools Organization of the Sarrat
National High School is committed to support the programs mandated by
the Department of Education. These programs aimed to create programs,
projects and activities that addresses issues and concerns and to develop
proper environmental values and attitudes among the young.

This year, the YES-O has been working with other school organization
in those environmental-related projects. The activities conducted by the
organization serves as an avenue for the students especially the officers of
the said organizations to develop their community involvement and
responsibility as rangers of the environment.

Waste Segregation

Generating waste is almost unavoidable in today’s world

but we can find ways in reducing the amount of toxins that
enter in to our atmosphere and we may even save
someone’s life. With the initiative of the Science
Department, waste segregation was done weekly in the
school’s garbage pit. In this activity, students became aware
on the importance of waste segregation. Effective waste
segregation means that less wastes and much easier to
recycle.

Waste Management
Program

To help monitor the

segregation of waste in the
school, the YES-O Club
decided to implement the
following:
Every classroom should
have three trash bins
properly labelled as bio and
non-biodegradable and
bottles; and representatives
in every section have their
schedule in monitoring the
dumping of garbage in the
compost pit.

Launching of Activities:

With the intention of creating environmental awareness among

the students of Sarrat National High School, the Science
Department of the school initiated the celebration of the Sarrat
National High School-Science Month on September 1-30, 2018.

The projects and activities conducted in the said celebration all

have the advocacy of preserving the environment and making
the world a better place to live in. The projects and activities
done by the club increased the awareness of students who
participated regarding the ways in which they can help promote
the advocacy of the club.

Narrative Report

I. Introduction
Plastic, once invented to make man’s life easier is now one
of the major problems we face today that threaten every
living organism’s life in the planet. It is estimated that eight
million tons of plastic is dumped into the world’s seas every
year and roughly four percent of these comprises of drinking
apparatuses.
Schools generate a lot of waste most of which were made
up of plastic materials. The school canteen or cafeteria is
especially liable for drinking implements such as plastic cups,
paper cups and plastic disposables. All of these may be
avoided if students bought and drank from their own tumbler
which they themselves will have to wash and clean.
Though proper waste management is being strictly
implemented in our school, the use of plastic has not been
reduce. With this pressing problems, the YES-O Club with the
participation of the students and the school faculty and staff
wants to adapt and implement the green school project,
“Bring your Own Tumbler ” to help reduce the use of single-
used plastics in the school such as drinking implements and

II. Objectives

The name of this program is “Bring Your Own Tumbler Day!”

(BYOT Day!). The objectives of the program are as follows:

• To reduce the amount of waste generated by drinking
implements in the school.
• To spread awareness about the pressing problems our school
encounter in using plastic materials.

III. Implementation

On August 20, 2018, the principal approved that every
Wednesday of the month is the day of Bring Your Tumbler. In
this day, the canteens are not allowed to sell bottled waters to
students as well as teachers, faculty and staff of the school. It is
reiterated that mineral bottles or any form of plastic bottles are
not allowed to be used during the said day. A prize of one
galloon of mineral water will be given to the section/s, if and
only if, ALL students as well the adviser will bring their own
tumbler on that day.
Bring Your Own Tumbler Day!
Narrative Report

The program was launch on September 3, 2018 as a part of

the kick-off celebration for the month-long celebration of the
Science Month 2018. The day before the first implementation,
(September 5, 2018, Wedenesday) posters about the said
activity were mounted in strategic places in the school.

IV. Outcomes

According to the school and YECS Canteen, an estimated of

400 mineral bottles were being sold every day. At the end of
BYOT Day, there was a noticeable reduction in the amount of
used bottled mineral waters.
There is a significant decrease in the amount of used
mineral bottled water after the implementation of the BYoT
Day!. This only shows that the program can be effective in
reducing single-used plastics in our school such as mineral
bottles and other drinking implements.
As the saying goes, “You cannot change what’s going on
around until you start changing what’s going on within you.”
Indeed, if we want to live in a better world, we should start
within ourselves. With proper discipline, armed with the right
education, we can finally solve our problems with plastic
wastes. Hence, protecting and preserving “Mother Earth” for
future generation.

Bring Your Own Tumbler Day!
Narrative Report

As part of the school’s commitment to reduce and

hopefully eliminate single-used plastics in the school,
tumbler’s will be given to selected students during
the Brigada Eskwela 2019 by the Science
Department.

We hope that this gesture will be the start of a

new and greener future in our school as we pursue
our dreams to eliminate plastics in our society.

YES-O Exhibit
Narrative Report
Acquisition of learning doesn’t only occur inside the
four walls of a classroom, nor can only written materials
measure level of understanding. Students must be given
opportunities to go out of the conventional classroom
setting and explore other means of learning. Engaged
them to learning-related activities and must be given
chance as well to show that learning takes place by
letting apply and show how much they have learned
through concrete evidences (project output, researches,
any products of researcher or any manipulative
instructional devices).

Exhibitions are typically designed to encourage

students to think critically, solve challenging problems,
and develop skills such as oral communication, public
speaking, planning, self-sufficiency, goal-setting and
actual literacy. It may also be interdisciplinary, in the
sense that they require students to apply skills or
investigate issues across many different subject areas or
domain of knowledge.
YES-O Exhibit
Narrative Report
The organization fully believes in this method to
create a permanent and effective learning. For this
purpose, the YES-O conducted an exhibit that
showcased school-based YES-O implementation of
environmental projects. The exhibit was visited by
students as well as teachers who were very much
interested in these projects.

Science exhibit is one way to boost their

confidence to excel more in science and to
motivate them because they can share their
projects and ideas with their friends,
parents and other stakeholders who will
visit the exhibit.

Program(Segregation and
Recycling)

Narrative Report
Irresponsible discarding of waste and not considering its negative impact in our
surroundings and to others is one of the most challenging obstacle being faced today which
can cause serious problems to our environment. It’s negative effects doesn’t only leave
impact in our environment but extends up to the health of living beings and economy for
e.g. air pollution, soil contamination, spread of hazardous diseases, etc.

Waste management is the overall process of collection, transportation, treatment and

discarding of waste products, sewage and garbage. It also includes other legal, monitoring,
recycling and regulating activities. Governed by its advocacy to stir awareness on
environmental issues and elevate initiative of the people to develop and promote ways to
stop the threat of further damage on the environment. The YES-O continuously implements
and monitors proper carrying out of waste segregation in the whole school.

This project aims to reduce the adverse effects of waste on environment, health and
the beauty of nature. To support this, the YES-O monitors participation of every classroom
and offices in the school. From having three garbage cans in the classroom up to proper
disposal in the school garbage pit.
The Organization believe that through the implementation of waste management, we
can help conserve our planet’s natural beauty which can be flawed by thoughtless disposal
of waste, fly-tipping and senseless littering. Natural beauty is a legacy and a right for future
generations and conserving it, as well as our natural resources, for their benefit is our
responsibility today.

Narrative Report

Environmental Sustainability helps prevent global warming and climate change. One example of
environmental sustainability is simply through cleaning. Cleanliness in the environment contributes a lot in
maintaining a clean and green surrounding. Cleaning is a simple but helpful way of improving a healthy
environment.

We know that litter takes years to break down. It releases pollutants into the air, water, and soil and
can impact wildlife. A School Grounds Clean Up campaign is an excellent way to educate students about the
negative impacts of litter on the environment and how they can help to make a difference in their
community. School grounds and community clean up events make a difference. These actions, although
small, have significant positive impacts on the environment and demonstrate the power of working together.

At Sarrat National High School, we promote Clean Up campaign to demonstrate our commitment to
creating a healthy and sustainable world. As a manifestation to this, science teachers as well as volunteer
students, the Crime Watch Society and the SSG officers helped one another in cleaning the school’s
surrounding and get the Sta. Monica Parish Church grounds accessible again for everyone after the
onslaught of Bagyong Ompong. The said activities build environmental stewardship and teach students the
importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling to decrease the amount of waste we produce. Students also
realized that litter in the environment can impact air, water, soil, and wildlife.

We are obliged to take care of the things that God gave us. Our little ways help a lot in improving a
healthy environment. There is a saying that goes “Big things comes from small ones.” We must start in
ourselves and encourage others to achieve change. We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment so
to prevent destroying it, we must take actions to help it.
