CELL STRUCTURE & FUNCTION

1. Name the longest cell in our body. Draw its labelled diagram.
Ans. Nerve cell. Fig 8.4(c) Pg 92.

2. Draw a well labelled diagram of a plant cell and animal cell.

Ans. Fig. 8.7 (a), (b). Pg 96

3. Write three points of difference between plant cell and animal cell.
Ans. Plant cell- 1. It has cell wall. 2. It has plastid. 3. Vacuoles are bigger in size.
Animal cell- 1. Cell wall is absent. 2. Plastid is absent. 3. Vacuoles are smaller in size.

4. Give reasons for the following:

(a)Why are nerve cells both in elephant and rat long and branched?
Ans. They are long in both elephant and rat as they perform the same function of
transferring messages.

(b) Plants do not have bones yet have a rigid structure.

Ans. This is because of the presence of cell wall in them.

(c) Nucleus is the brain of the cell.

Ans. As nucleus controls all the activities which occur inside a cell.

5. Differentiate between:

(a) Cell wall and Plasma membrane/ cell membrane

Cell wall Plasma Membrane
It is the outermost covering in plant It is outermost covering in animal
cell which provides protection and cell which controls the entry and
rigidity to the plant cell. exit of substances in and out of the
cell and also gives shape to the cell.

(b) Prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell

Prokaryotic cell Eukaryotic cell

1. The cell having nuclear material 1. The cell having nuclear material
without nuclear membrane is with nuclear membrane is
called as a prokaryotic cell. called as a eukaryotic cell.
2. For example bacteria and blue 2. For example cheek cell and
green alga. nerve cell.
6. State one function of each of the following:

(a) Chromosome -The thread like structure present inside the nucleus which carry genes
and help in the transfer of characters from parents to the offspring.

(b)Plastid- Provides colour to various parts of the plant. Ex. Chloroplast provides green
colour to the plant. It helps in photosynthesis.

(c)Nucleus- It controls all the activities occurring inside a cell. It also helps in cell
division.

7. Define:

i) Cell:
The basic structural and function unit of living organisms is called a cell. It was
discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665.

ii) Tissue
A group of cells similar in structure performing similar function is known as tissue.
