Focusing on creating awareness and educating people about

environment and its conservation through butterflies
With a rich diversity of flora and fauna, Namdapha is a heaven for
butterfly enthusiasts. Only around 25% have been explored till now
in the lower elevation, exploration into core areas will definitely
bring out many more species in days to come.
NAMDAPHA
BUTTERFLY MEET
SINCE 2018

Namdapha is combination of Two Singpho words, “Nam " & “Dapha” which
means “forest” and “the origin” respectively. The park, which has an area of
around 1985 Sq Km, was declared in 1983 and designated as the country’s
Fifteenth tiger reserve in the same year.

The largest protected region within the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot,
Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh, is a "dream destination for
butterfly enthusiasts."

The Namdapha Butterfly Meet has added a new dimension to tourism in eastern
Arunachal Pradesh. The national park is renowned for being the only park in India
to hold all four big cat species—leopard, tiger, clouded leopard, and snow leopard.

6
OUR AIM
Ø The aim of the appeal is to generate awareness among the locals about the
function and significance of butterflies in the environment.

Ø To investigate various locations of Namdapha National Park and locate the

Ø Allowing the participants from all over India to interact with the local tour
operators so they can explore potential future eco-tourism opportunities based
on Namdapha.

understanding of how to use technical tools for related activities.

BUTTERFLY MEET
A Forum for Innovation

Motivated by deep reverence and urgent concern for the natural

world, with a shared belief that through collaboration and
commitment, we can address the critical and collective challenges
humanity is facing in the coming decades.
The event drew people from all over the country, which is a sign of
success. With such widespread participation, the goal of informing
people about Namdapha's diverse ecosystem was accomplished.
Because of the positive outcome of the first ever meeting, people
working in the butterfly industry in India are now more interested in
Namdapha. More locals and local entrepreneurs must be
encouraged to participate in the coming months so that they can
learn about earning a living through eco-tourism.

BUTTERFLY MEET
Building A Global Community

NBM brings together an uncommon community, bound by a shared

sense of purpose.

We all believe in the transformative power of story to inspire awe at the

wonders of our natural world and ignite critical changes required to
restore and protect it through high-impact global collaborations.

Making Namdapha Butterfly Meet an annual event, with the help of locals,
the Department of Environment and Forests, Tourism Department and
other interested NGOs working in similar fields. Namdapha, as a brand in
the field of environment, is attracting enthusiasts, scholars, experts, and
others in every coming days.

13
THE
LARGER INTEREST
The meet encourages participation of young students & locals at minimal cost so that they get the opportunity to study
butterflies in best possible way with under guidance from experts around them. The event aims to explore best sites in different
tracks around Namdapha which will further provide data base and help in conservation of that particular area.

The students were immensely benefited along with the locals who participated. Such a mixed participant added to more
knowledge sharing and contributed more into the outcome of the meet. Identification and brief information on butterflies were
shared by them.

14
ECOSYSTEM
BENEFITS
• An essential component of the food chain, moths and
butterflies are prey for birds, bats, and other insects-
eating mammals.

• Other predators and parasites, many of which are unique

to certain species or groups of species, coexist with
butterflies.
• Ecologists frequently utilize butterflies as model species to
examine the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, as
well as climate change.

15
ACADEMIC VALUE
• Many nations employ the amazing life cycles of butterflies and moths to educate students about nature. One of
nature's wonders is the transition from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis.
• The exquisite wing patterns, iridescence, and use as illustrations of insect migration are additional educational
features.

16
ECONOMIC
VALUE
Namdapha National Park, dubbed the "heaven of
butterflies" by Indian butterfly aficionados, can play a
significant role in boosting ecotourism, opening up a wealth
of options for residents and perhaps generating significant
jobs. Each year, thousands of people visit various regions of
India in search of butterflies and moths.
Every butterfly and moth have evolved a unique set of
chemicals to ward off predators and parasites, find a mate,
and get past the host plant's chemical defenses. Each of
these substances has a potential use that can be profitably
tapped into. For instance, one of our most ubiquitous and
common species, the Meadow Brown, has been found to
have potent antibiotics.

17
EVENT OVERVIEW
Ø The participants are divided into groups, each led by an expert, and dispatched to a specific location
for fieldwork.

Ø Every evening, the daily outcomes were discussed in group sessions, during which each group
submitted their day's work. Experts identified and documented confounded samples.

Ø The final list will be compiled, based on the existing checklist, the new checklist will be updated.
