Search for the roles and responsibilities of nurses before, during and after chemotherapy. Utilize LRC and
EBSCOHost to look for answers. Your answers should be in a bullet type form with a minimum of 10 items.

• Assess the clients condition including

- Most recent report of blood counts including hemoglobin, hematocrit, WBC, and platelets.
- Physical Status
- Level of anxiety
- Psychological Status
• Medications to be administered in conjunction with the chemotherapy e.g. antiemetics, sedatives
etc.
• Enhanced patient safety is important, because there is no antidote for chemotherapy
administration errors other than side effect management and emotional support as patients deal
with the consequences.
• Take measures to prevent medication errors: Perform independent double-check of original
orders with a second chemotherapy-certified RN.
• Chemotherapy time-out process should be incorporated into daily workflow to enhance patient
safety and prevent chemotherapy administration harm.
• Double check for accuracy of treatment regimen, chemotherapy agent, dose, calculations of body
surface area, schedule, and route of administration.
• Nurses should be attentive, connect with patients, elicit patients’ unmet needs, and provide
committed patient support.
• Coordinated proactive care leads to predictive care to meet the future needs of patients, including
the prevention of adverse events.
• Administering chemotherapy drugs.
• Be sure to remember to alert people in the area of the spill and put out the sign warning of a
chemotherapy spill.
