1.2.2 CASE B
In principle a single mechanical seal should not be installed where eventual leakage of product could produce the
risk of ignition or explosion.
It will be at customer care to evaluate, for every application, the risk of ignition or explosion due to leakage of the
seal.
If eventual leakage could produce a risk of ignition or explosion in atmosphere side, only dual pressurised seal
shall be considered.
The evaluation, in this case, has to cover a large variety of situations and a general approach shall be considered.
It shall be at customer care to verify that the relevant application belongs at one of the here below specified
categories.
Please contact FLUITEN in order to verify your application.
A sound and conservative approach recommends to consider that the maximum local temperature inside the seal
(calculated as defined at chapter 1.2.1) is thoroughly transmitted to the outside .
General rules to calculate temperature increase in operation are given in Appendix A&B.
Detailed instructions about installation ,start-up and operation are given in next chapters.

1.3 LUBRIFICATION
The efficiency of the lubrication of the sliding faces of a mechanical seal is of paramount importance for a safe
operation in explosive atmosphere.
Poor lubrication of a mechanical seal or roller bearing, if applicable, can generate, in a span of time
depending on the operation conditions, consistent increase of the temperature in the surrounding
environment.
Whenever an efficient and reliable lubrication of the seal cannot be insured, suitable monitoring devices
shall be installed. (See also Chapter 2.2 - 2.3 – 2.4)
FLUITEN’S mechanical seals are predisposed for the application of a wide variety of control instruments
INFO .Please contact FLUITEN for any needing.
Furthermore the manufacturer, to evaluate the class of temperature, shall apply a safety coefficient, as specified
in EN 1127-1 Section 6.4.2, and as defined in chapter 2.3.1 & 3.2.
NOTE 1.4 : As specified on EN 13463-1 at chapter 13.3.3 , reduced margins in respect of the operating
temperature can be accepted for machinery where ,by means of a dedicated a prototype test , effective surface
temperature can be measured.
In this particular case the safety margin shall be:

The user shall verify that his specific operative conditions does't comport any risk of sparking.
Application of anti-sparking bushings is trongly recommended whenever there is a risk of mechanical contact
between rotary and stationary parts.
2. ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
In potentially explosive areas, personal clothing and equipment must be used which are able to prevent any
residual electrostatic charges from being triggered. No equipment must be used which may generate sparks
and/or naked flames.
Generally , if no signal is coming from the galvanic barrier , the damage is in the thermocouple .
INFO On the other hand , if the reading of the temperature value is not correct , a correct regulation of the
trimmer of the galvanic barrier is required (make reference to the supplied instruction manual of the
galvanic barrier ).
As specified by EN 1127-1 , paragraph 6.4.2 , the max. operative temperature shall be defined as follow:
GAS/VAPOUR: T_op_max <= 80% of minimum ignition temperature
DUST: T_op_max <= 2/3 of minimum ignition temperature
3. FUNCTIONAL TEST
3.1 STATIC TEST
Make reference to the relevant instructions for assembly, use and maintenance for what concerns operative
parameters.
Furthermore during the functional test the following shall be checked:
3.1.2 Leakage
Fisiological leakage on atmosphere side
(In case of gaseous products by means of a leakage detector , according to EPA Method 21 )
Fisiological leakage on product side can be detected as described in chapter 2.4.2
As specified by EN 1127-1 , paragraph 6.4.2 , the max. operative temperature shall be defined as follow:
GAS/VAPOUR: T_op_max <= 80% of minimum ignition temperature
DUST: T_op_max <= 2/3 of minimum ignition temperature
Poor lubrication of a mechanical seal or roller bearing , if applicable , can generate ,in a span of time
depending on the operation conditions , consistent increase of the temperature in the surrounding
environment.
4. OPERATION
4.1 BASIC CONCEPTS FO A SAFE OPERATION
In potentially explosive areas, personal clothing and equipment must be used which are able to prevent any
residual electrostatic charges from being triggered. No equipment must be used which may generate sparks
and/or naked flames.
As described in the previous chapters the mechanical seal group is intrinsically safe , provided that all parts are
operating in a proper way.
In order to guarantee a sufficient level of safety the user shall take care to carry out periodical checks of the
systems .
A cross check of all instrumentations readings gives in principle better guarantees in order to detect possible
failures.
Furthermore periodical measurements of eventual emissions, by means of a leakage detector , according to EPA
Method 21 , should be carried out.
5. MAINTENANCE
In potentially explosive areas, personal clothing and equipment must be used which are able to prevent any
residual electrostatic charges from being triggered. No equipment must be used which may generate sparks
and/or naked flames.
Warning: Eventual maintenance and/or replacement of parts should be carried out exclusively in FLUITEN’s
workshop.
The repaired seal group should be re-tested and new Ex marking should be applied , in order to guarantee the
integrity of all components.
For the replacement of seal elements is raccomanded to replace every 5000 working-hours.
For the replacement of roller bearing is raccomanded to replace every 10000 working-hours.
APPENDIX A
Values shown in the herebelow table are evaluated considering the following parameters:
Max. environment temperature 50°C
Max. process fluid temperature 300°C
Please verify with FLUITEN for a specific verification or for values exceeding the above
Furthermore separate evaluations are made for balanced and unbalanced mechanical seals , defined as follows:
BI = Balanced mechanical seal; NB = Unbalanced mechanical seal
Finally a suitable factor “K” shall be applied to take in account the different values of the friction coefficient ,
depending on seal faces materials combination.
The maximum local temperature shall be calculated as follows:
TS max = T_product + Delta T ( from tables A1&A2) * K
