Aboriginal Education Working Group
AGENDA – Wednesday 31st March 2021

1. Welcome
Present: Sian Wailes, XXXXX, XXXXX & XXXXX
Apologies: N/A
2. Acknowledgement of Country
• UPDATE: Sian has re-designed the Acknowledgement of Country document and
distributed it to all staff and classrooms. So far, Sian has also done explicit teaching
sessions with P/1Y, P/1B, 2, 5/6B and 5/6Y.
• DISCUSSSION: XXXXX would like the name of a few Aboriginal and Torres Strait children
to mentor in the Acknowledgement of Country for high school students, in preparation
for the whole school ANZAC Assembly.
• FUTURE FOCUS: moving it to the acknowledgement of country from the heart.
3. Plan for Aboriginal Education at Woodbridge School for 2021
• Deadly choices: Sport and art options were very successful for high school students. Only
can be done once a year and only for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
• Aboriginal Education Professional Development (PD) session for Woodbridge staff in
2021 –
SCHEDULED: Monday 26th April 2021
DISCUSSION: SETAC and DoE Aboriginal Education Tasmania. Plus, “You can’t ask that
panel”.
FOLLOW UP: Sian to follow up with XXX regarding the format. XXXX and XXXX will be
here in person. Sian will email the questions the Friday before the meeting.
• 2021 NAIDOC theme this year is: Heal Country
DISCUSSION:
o Art opportunities
o XXXXXXX (land management by fire, spear throwing and clap sticks) – possible
presentation. Organise through SETAC and ask about pricing.
• Establishment of students working group (Cultural Warriors) to brainstorm some ideas
for 2021 –
UPDATE: Sian has emailed Margate Primary School for further information.
• AEW application –
ACTION: Sian and XXXX need to liaise with senior staff regarding funding for a possible
position, and we also need to talk with XXXXX at Bruny Island School about how we
could do a possible joint application. XXXX could help us to facilitate finding someone for
the possible position.
4. Woodbridge School Aboriginal Plant Use Trail
• UPDATE: Sian has updated brochures and are currently being considered by SETAC
Cultural Committee.
• UPDATE: Sian has contacted Parks Tasmania to see if they can provide advice as to
where they get their plant signs designed and printed. She liaised with a Parks
representative and she gave some good advice regarding signage.
• FOLLOW UP: Sian to travel to Howrah Primary to review signs in situ.
• FOLLOW UP: XXXX to follow with Men’s Shed.
• NEXT STEPS: Sian to eventually go out to get a formal quote for signage. Sian to develop
funding application for Woodbridge School Association once quote has been sourced.

5. Acknowledgement of Country sign in foyer


• UPDATE: Sian has applied for NIAA NAIDOC Week Grant for $1000.
• DISCUSS: Possible artists and other avenues for funding if not successful.
