Excerpt – Mandatory Reporting Record of Conversation (Term 3 2021)

• When the 5/6 classes amalgamated for the grade 5/6 reward game – under Mrs XXXXXX and Mrs
XXXXXX – they asked a student to go to the Assistant Principal’s office and she refused to go and
was back-chatting the teachers.
• When the game finished and the bell went, the teachers were talking to me about the incident
(because I am the student’s class teacher). It was at this point the student walked past crying.
• I asked her to slow down and talk to me and she didn’t initially stop. I followed her to the office
and she was crying. She said that she didn’t know if she was getting picked up or catching the
bus.
• I asked the receptionist to please call the student’s Dad to find out whether she was catching the
bus.
• I asked the student to come outside into the fresh air and chat with me, which she did.
• The student sat down outside the front of the school (no students were around), and I sat down
on the ground about a metre away from her facing her sidewards.
• I asked the student what was going on. She said that she felt that teachers were being unfair and
she didn’t deserve to go to Mrs XXXXX office.
• I reminded her of our conversation with the whole-of-the class regarding the expectations for
behaviour to participate in the grade 5/6 class reward game. She agreed that she had heard this
discussion. I said that I was surprised by her behaviour with Mrs XXXXXXX and Mrs XXXXX
because we had already discussed this and she initially was ok.
• I asked the student if there was anything else going on.
• She said that she’d asked to speak to the Chaplain during the Health lesson (period 6) and Miss
XXXXX had said no.
• I said that generally people can’t leave mid-lesson to visit the Chaplain because she isn’t
necessarily available, however I can organise for her to talk to someone in our Support Team if
she’d like us to. She said that yes, she’d like to talk to someone. I said that I will organise that
ASAP.
• She then went onto say that things are a bit hard at home at the moment, with lots of fighting.
• I asked her why.
• She replied by saying that her brother and his girlfriend have been getting into fights, and this
has been waking her and her Mum up. She said that her brother has also been trying to leave at
night when he’s not allowed to and has also been punching holes in the walls and swearing a lot.
She then went onto say that last night was very bad, her Dad needed to “drop him”.
• I asked her what this meant.
• She went onto say that Dad had to get him onto the floor.
• The receptionist then came out of the office and said that the student was to catch the Metro
bus home to Dad’s house.
• I said that I was sorry that things were not going well at home, and that I understand how
difficult it can be when family is fighting. I said that will organise for someone for her to talk to.
• The student said that she wanted me to ring Dad and let her know that she was upset and had a
bad day.
• The student went to the bus stop.
• I spoke to the principal straight away about what student had disclosed to me. We discussed my
mandatory reporting requirements, particularly in regards to the fact that one student involved
in the disclosure attending our school whilst the other sibling attended a different school.
