Sample Call

Scenario: Gloria is a student in your 5th grade science class. She is a well-behaved

student who likes science. But today you had to ask her three times to stop turning around and

speaking with the student behind her. The third time you asked her to turn around, she told you

that science is for “losers.” You decided you should call home to check in on Gloria.

Me (M): Hello?

Parent (P): Yes?

M: Hi this is Mr. Tipping, Gloria’s 5th grade science teacher. How are you today?

P: I’m doing well! Yourself?

M: I’m doing good thanks. Do you have a moment to talk about Gloria?

P: Of course, I’m on a lunch break and have about 5 minutes to talk. Is everything ok with her?

M: Everything with Gloria is fine, yes. I just wanted to call and say that Gloria is a great student

and always well behaved in class. She seems to enjoy the class and turns in work regularly and

does an all around great job in my class. However there was an issue today in class with her

behavior which resulted in a rude comment from her near the end of the class period today about

science being for losers. I handled the situation after class and talked to her about her behavior

after class was dismissed and thought I should follow up with you about this incident.
P: Well, this is unexpected. Gloria is such a sweet girl and is always telling us about how much

she loves science and how fun it is. I’ll be sure to talk to her tonight about this. Did you happen

to ask why she said that and acted the way she did?

M: I did not no. It was a rather unexpected comment I was not prepared for and I will be sure to

follow up with her tomorrow about it. Do you notice these behaviors from Gloria at home at all?

P: Not recently I haven’t no. She has been saying that she has been worried about other classes

with the work she’s been receiving and how much of it she has to do. Besides that she usually is

a sweet girl who loves school.

M: Well I will try my best to make sure that Gloria is getting all the help she needs not only in

my classroom but others as well. Like I said Gloria is a great student and is always doing and

completing her work on time and doing great in my class. I’ll be sure to follow up with her

tomorrow and do my best to make sure she is getting the help she needs.

P: Oh thank you so much! I know that would help her out a lot to have some help since me and

her father aren’t home all that often because of work. When we are home she usually is talking

about school in some sort of positive light.

M: I’ll be sure to check in on her through the day then in addition to the help I’ll be sure to make

sure she gets. I will follow up with Gloria tomorrow and then get back with you in a week to let

you know how things go.

P: That sounds like a plan to me! I look forward to following up with you in the future!

M: Absolutely! I will talk to you then. Have a great rest of your day!

P: You too! Bye now.

M: Bye bye.
