Current Events Through Music

Over the years mental health issues have become a bigger issue in not only everyone

but especially teenagers. The voices in your head that keep telling you that you're not good

enough. Going through depression and eating disorders. Using self harm as a coping

mechanism. Many people are going through the same things. There are resources out there to

help you. Music being a way many people use to express themselves and their feelings. Artists

will use their music as a way to let all their feelings out. Like Demi Lovato in her song

Skyscraper.

Skyscraper is a song made about depression, anxiety, self harm, and eating disorders.

Demi Lovato had all these voices in her head telling her she wasn’t skinny enough or that she

didn’t have a reason to be here. So she wrote Skyscraper to tell all of her problems that she is

strong enough to get through it and it wont pull her down anymore. She said, “Go on and try to

tear me down. I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper.” Meaning that no matter what

gets thrown at her she will come out stronger. Not listening to all the negative things in life and

only looking at the positives.

Demi Lovato’s songs all have some sort of an impact on me. Skyscraper is just one that

I can relate to from when I was at my lowest. It has taught me that there are higher things in life

that will keep you going and away from all the negativity. It also showed me that it is okay to go

through things and there is no reason to be ashamed of it. Asking for help is a good thing, not

something you should run from. Skyscraper made me realize that some of my friends we’re

going through the same thing. It brought us all closer, and we used each other for help. Music is

one of the biggest things that helped me from my dark point. I could choose what song I wanted

to listen to that corresponded with how I was feeling.
