SONG ANALYSIS

SKYSCRAPER -
DEMI LOVATO
SONG
WHY SHE WROTE THIS
SONG?
▸ Demi suffered with an eating disorder, called Anorexia,
which means a lack of loads of appetite for food. It’s an
emotional disorder characterised by an obsessive desire to
lose weight by refusing to eat. It was also because of self-
harming, and depression.

▸ So when I hear the song, I think of her saying all this to her
ED, SH and depression. Like telling it that you can’t break
her no more, and that she is strong enough to get through it
all. When she said “feel better to watch me while I bleed?” it
feels she is saying this to her haters that judge her because
of her struggles.
LYRIC INTERPRETATION
▸ This uses personification to add more depth, into describing a
dark and gloomy time and place to be in. Making it seem as
though everywhere around her is sad and she is right in the
middle of it. She is in a place where not only she is sad, but
everyone around her is too. It’s a broken-hearted hell hole.
She is watching all negativity and depression around her, so
she feels the need to help them. She is the one catching
everyone’s tear drops, while she holds back her own.

▸ It seems like everything around her is falling apart and, at this

point, she is only watching helplessly; consumed by so many
thoughts and feelings.
LYRIC INTERPRETATION
She is to her lowest point. There is nothing left that anyone could do
or say that could make her any worse. She is at rock bottom. So it no
longer matters. She states that she truly doesn't care anymore of what
you may take or do to her. She's giving to free will of the man to tear
her down and make her feel like nothing is left for her in the
beautiful world she lives in.But she knows that it can only get better
from this point forward. So she is saying go ahead and get it out of
your system because when your done I will be stronger than before
and I will be a better person because of it. The only way to go is up

“Like I’m made of glass, Like I’m made of paper,” indicates her
fragile state of mind, where she feels like she is in pieces.
LYRIC INTERPRETATION
▸ No matter what people say, she will be strong and not let
what people say affect her. She will keep fighting everyday,
because she is a warrior and has gone through a lot, of which
will affect how she lives and what’s she will say when
people bully or hate on her. It’s like someone tried hurting
her but she ignores all their hate and just grew stronger than
ever.

▸ The smoke clearing refers to her finally being able to see the
situation of her relationship clearly. Since she is no longer
completely smitten by him, she can see his true colours and
how he really was, and feels no regrets. Her perspective is
cleared of judgement.
TEXT

LYRIC INTERPRETATION
▸ She is completely bruised, she’s hit rock bottom, but it
doesn’t’ matter because she is not going to give up. “All
my windows still are broken,” exhibit her feelings are
delicate like a broken window.

▸ This verse is an example of a simile comparing clouds

to her dreams and aspirations. It is used to show the
singer, while rising a over her problems and being
stronger, is much closer to reaching what her life can be
like, instead of remaining to be weak, letting her
problems get to her.
MY
ANALYSIS:
The general effect is of being taken into a hostile environment – the unknown, chaotic, mysterious depths of the world, inspired by a picture
of the apocalypse. (0500_w16_ms_22) The song ‘Skyscraper’ by Demi Lovato, is used to imply the uncertainty and dynamism of life, and
that other buildings are the obstacles and hindrances around you: loss of loved one or friendship, harassment, abuse, hate, and failure.

Using personification to add more depth, into describing, “Skies are crying,” provokes imagery of a dark and gloomy time and place to be
in. Making it seem as though everywhere around her is sad, and she is right in the middle of it. She is in a place where not only she is sad,
but everyone around her is too. It’s a broken-hearted hell hole. She is watching all negativity and depression around her, “Catching tear
drops in my hands,” so she feels the need to help them. She is the one catching everyone’s tear drops, while she holds back her own.

She is to her lowest point. There is nothing left that anyone could do or say that could make her any worse, “You can take everything I
have, You break everything I am,”exhibits that she is at rock bottom. So it no longer matters. She states that she truly doesn't care anymore
of what you may take or do to her. She's giving to free will of the man to tear her down and make her feel like nothing is left for her in the
beautiful world she lives in. But she knows that it can only get better from this point forward. So she is saying go ahead and get it out of
your system because when your done she will be stronger than before and she will be a better person because of it. The only way to go is
up. “Like I’m made of glass, Like I’m made of paper,” indicates her fragile state of mind, where she feels like she is in pieces. Revealing
the romanticised view of challenging adventure, fighting adversity, contrasted with reality. (0500_m20_ms_12)

The theme of independence is depicted in, “I will be rising from the ground, like a Skyscraper” which conveys that no one is allowed to
question her decisions and that she is finally the one who has control and power (0500_s18_ms_21).
