ASSIGNMENT 7 (Summary): Thoroughly summarize and reflect upon your entire 10 hour Field

Observation Placement.

>>>

For this 10 hour field observation I was assigned to an English teacher from

Patricia A Bendorf Elementary. I was there Friday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On

Friday, I was there for a few hours to familiarize myself with the teacher and students.

When I arrived I had to sign in the front office to inform them why I was at the school as

well as log in the time I arrive and leave. Once I got to the classroom the students were

at their specials, which was art. The only person in the room was the teacher and she

was filling out some paperwork. She greeted me right away then we went to pick up the

students from their art class. Since the mask mandates are lifted there were only a few

students wearing their masks along with the teachers. I would say that there only a few

people wearing their masks. As I observed the classroom I saw one of the students

sneezed but did not cover their mouth or nose.

Upon returning to the classroom, the students began working on their online

quizzes for the assigned assignments. For those that already finished their quizzes they

were able to do their Iready or finish the assignment in their workbook. Since the

students were taking their quizzes I did not want to wonder around the classroom to

bother them therefore I stayed at the seat that was prepared for me and stayed there. I

noticed the teacher was organizing the books therefore I went over to assist. We

chatted about her job and what she feels about, majority just small conversations.

Afterwards it was time for the recess; some of the children were playing among

themselves as some stayed to talked with the teacher. The boys were the ones running
around as the girls grouped up to talk among themselves and some were even

speaking with the teacher. I assumed that the mentor teacher is very open to talking

with them, which I strive to be as a future educator. When recess was over the students

were preparing to present their presentation on Black role models for Black History

Month. It was interesting to observe how the teacher ran the presentation as I was

always used to the teacher picking on students to present or base of volunteers.

However, compared to my experience the teacher did not pick any students to go but

instead had volunteers. After no more students volunteered, she used a website to

select names of students, but there were a few students who didn't want to go even

when the website picked their names, surprisingly the teacher was lenient enough to

move onto someone else. Before the students moved onto a different subject I had to

leave.

On Tuesday, my second day there I got to work with a small group of students

and met her afternoon class. In the morning, I was walking around to help the students

if they needed any help with anything as they were doing a reading assignment in their

book. Later on, I got the opportunity to go over the answers and helped three of the

students. It was a great experience and I enjoyed it a lot. They had recess at the same

time, just like the other day I was observing. However, I tried talking to student who was

standing by herself all by herself. We had a small conversation and I was glad to see

her opened up to me as I figured she was shy. Once we got back to the classroom it

was time for a little math review and they were learning about volume. I did the thing

that I did in the morning, which was walking around the class to see if any of the

students needed help.

As time passed by it was time for lunch, which the mentor teacher had to walk

the students to the cafeteria. After getting back to the classroom from lunch it was time

for the classes to switch. The afternoon class worked on the same assignments as the

homeroom class. The mentor teacher gave me another opportunity to help a small

group of students. Overall, the homeroom and afternoon class does the exact same

assignments except for the math review part because the afternoon class’ homeroom

teacher goes over math with them in the morning.

Wednesday was my last day, I did not stay as long as Tuesday but I was able to

review math work with the entire class. My mentor teacher also had to assist her

coworker with the math work therefore it worked out fine as I was directing her class for

her. Due to it being review all I had to do was go over the answers with the students and

write down their work. And if their work was incorrect I would fix them and give them the

right answer. Although it has been awhile since I have touched on the concept of

volume and shapes, I thought I did fine, since I had less than five minutes to go over

what I was supposed to review with them. Since the week I went in was reading week

the class got to go outside for thirty minutes to read in the sun. It was a very nice and

calm experience as I was also able to sit and observe the students peacefully reading

their books. In conclusion, my field observation was very enjoyable and interesting. I

would love to be able to go back to experience it, again.
