Lesson 4: Maintain/Repair Consumer Electronic Products

Topic 2: Repairing and Maintaining Procedures

Appliance & Electronic Repair Safety

Before you begin any repair, make sure you fully understand the necessary steps and
that you can safely and competently use the required tools. Only use replacement parts of
the same size specifications and capacity as your original part.
Always have a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy in case of emergencies and make
sure you know how to use both. If you are unsure about any step of the repair procedure, it
is recommended you call an appliance repair technician for your own safety.

Individual Safety Precautions:

Make sure to pay close attention to any and all safety cautions and warnings posted on the
appliance or consumer electronic being serviced. Understanding and adhering to these
safety tips can greatly reduce the risk of personal injury.
I strongly suggest that before you begin to service any of your appliances that you strictly
adhere to each of the following:
 Always wear gloves.
 Be sure to wear safety boots.
 Refrain from wearing loose clothing.
 Remember to remove any loose jewelry.
 Tie back long hair.
 Wear safety glasses.
 Use the correct tools and make sure they are in good condition.
 Keep your work area well lit.
Electrical Safety Precautions:
Before beginning any appliance or consumer electronic repair, make sure you turn off the
power and completely unplug the appliance or electronic.
If in servicing your appliance a voltage test is required, reconnect the power supply only for
the duration of the voltage test. Disconnect the power immediately following the test. When
conducting a voltage test, make sure that no other conductive parts come into contact with
any exposed current-carrying metal parts.
When you replace any parts, or are putting the appliance or electronic back together,
always reinstall the wires to the correct terminals as per the wiring diagram. Inspect the
wires closely to make sure they are not crossing any sharp areas, are pinched in any way,

caught between panels, or in between any moving parts that can cause an electrical
malfunction.
It is also important to keep these safety tips in mind:
 Make sure that each major appliance has its own grounded electrical circuit.
 Never use an extension cord to plug in your appliance.
 Ensure the electricity has been turned off before servicing any appliance or consumer
electronic.
 Do not remove the ground wire from a three-prong power cord, or any other ground
wires from the appliance.
 Do not perform any alterations to any appliance switches, components, or features.
 Before repairing any appliance, replace any damaged, pinched, or frayed wires.
 Make sure all electrical connections within the unit are correctly and securely
connected.

Operating Safety Precautions:

Once you have repaired your appliance or electronic, do not operate it again until it has
been properly reinstalled according to the manual's use and care instructions, and
according to the manufacturer's instructions. Inspect any water valves or connections for
leaks before you reconnect the power supply.
Follow these additional safety tips to prevent injuries:
 Do not permit children to play on or operate your appliances.
 Do not permit persons who are unfamiliar with the proper operation of your
appliance to operate it.
 When disposing of an appliance, always remove all doors to guard against accidental
entrapment and suffocation.
 Use your appliances only to complete the tasks they were designed to complete.

TEST AREAS:
In all circumstances, it is necessary to create a safe working environment for testing. A test
area in which the work is to be done should be defined. This should be relatively
straightforward in a workshop situation, but may be more difficult when working in a
customer’s home.

..In the customer’s home

When working in a customer’s home, the person carrying out the testing should carry out a
site risk assessment to determine the steps necessary to create a safe working
environment.

(a) If you do not think it is safe to work in the home, don’t. Remove the equipment to the
workshop where you can work safely;
(b) Consider erecting a temporary barrier to prevent unauthorized people approaching
the danger area;
(c) Allow plenty of space to work in. If you do get a shock you may be less able to break
contact quickly, if at all, or are more likely to hit something if you are working in a cramped
area. Remove (or move away from) any objects that may pose a hazard. For example, if an
appliance is situated in a corner, consider pulling it out and working behind it;
(d) Make sure everyone in the home is aware of the dangers arising from the testing
work, and that they follow any precautions that are necessary. Ask for children and pets to
be kept from the area;
(e) Never leave an appliance unattended when it is in a dangerous condition (eg with live
conductors exposed).

..In the workshop

When testing is being done in a workshop, the following precautions should be considered:
(a) Access to the test area should be limited as far as is practicable to the competent
persons carrying out the testing. Suitable barriers may be provided to help prevent
unauthorized entry. Competent persons must have adequate knowledge of the electrical
dangers associated with the appliances and the precautions necessary to reduce the risk of
electric shock. Training must be provided as necessary;
(b) Other people who may enter the test area from time to time should be instructed
about the hazards that may be present and in particular be told not to touch anything on
the work bench. Their access should be limited to what is strictly necessary;
(c) Adjacent test positions should be separated using barriers to prevent a tester from
reaching into another test area;
(d) Soak test areas should, where possible, be separate from the test benches and when
equipment is on soak test, its covers should be in place
