“Effects of domestic and industrial waste water on germination and seedling growth of some plants”

By: Zille Huma et. Al

CRITIQUE PAPER

The researchers have a good topic. This is timely and one of the environmental problems that
addresses the impact of domestic and industrial waste water on our plants. Based on their credentials
they are intelligent students. They attend prestigious school in their country which is Department of
Botany, University of Peshawar. They have been in contact with the Center of Plant Biodiversity Khyber
Pakktunkhwa, Pakistan and I believe we can learn a lot about this issue. As I read the first page of the
research I found that domestic and industrial waste differs. Perhaps we know that two effluents are
known as water pollution but they come from different backgrounds. I hope they'll be able to figure out
why the two effluents are different by providing examples. Industrial waste waters are coming from
power plants. On the other hand domestic waters originates from activities such as restroom usage,
bathing, food preparation and laundry.

The study is really interesting aimed to determine how the selected plants will survive in both
waste waters. While reading I have struggled with the terminologies especially the scientific name of the
selected metal-tolerant plants that are used but I have been amazed at the same time. As a student I
find it hard to understand the material and methods were used in the study. Firstly because of scientific
words, I really tried to understand the associated words of what it means then the scientific
computation. How I wish that the content is simplified in terms of use of words and a kind of study. We
know we need more experience to figure out how is it done. Along the way, the research questions
asked in the research are easy to understand. The investigation was carried out to study the effect of
untreated effluents from pharmaceutical industry situated at industrial estate on seed germination and
early growth of six selected plant seeds.

Yet, I really tried to understand everything especially the tables and figures shown. I found out
the testing is difficult .it requires experts to conduct the testing and requires a technical approach. To
summarize the result the current experiment showed that some metal- tolerant plants like as Trigonella
foenum-graecum and Hordeum vulgare can maintain their germination under waste water condition. By
selecting the tolerant species waste water could be considered as potent waters for irrigaton. The use of
domestic waste water in plant nourishment would be beneficial alternative resources to fresh water.
However results also suggested that, treatment of sewage is necessary to minimize the pollution effects
before it is discharged to the Land resources of irrigation water.

The result is not bias because it was acquired in a scientific study and not in theory. It was
suggested to protect our nature is everyone’s responsibility. Water pollution can destroy species not just
plants but the living organisms in the river and ocean. Study gives us the awareness to avoid dumping
waste anywhere and apply necessary actions to prevent water wastes. If we continually doing dumping
waste the life of living things will be losing and it will also badly affect us especially the next generation.
So, be responsible for our actions.
