What is an Essay?
An essay is an extended piece of writing that presents and supports a thesis or proportion.

 Essays are usually written in a discursive style, bringing together ideas, evidence and arguments to address a specific problem or
question.
Essays are a short piece of writing representing one’s side of the argument or one’s experiences, stories, etc. Essays are very personalized,
meaning, its style varies from one writer to the other.

NARRATIVE

 Tells a story.
 A story told from one’s imagination is a fictional narrative
 A story about actual events is nonfictional Narrative.
While telling a story may sound easy to do, the narrative essay challenges student to think and write about themselves. When writing a narrative
essay, writers should try to involve the reader by making the story as vivid as possible.
“The Best kind of story for a narrative essay is one of you can use to reflect on a particular theme or Lesson.”

FORMS OF NARRATIVE WRITING

a. FICTION NARRATIVE- Literary texts that tell a story about imagined people, event and ideas.
b. NONFICTION NARRATIVE- Any kind of literary text that tells a story about real people, event, and ideas.

DESCRIPTIVE
 Paints a picture ( With Words)
 Describes a person, place, object or even memory of special significance.
 In a descriptive essay, the writer should show through the use of colorful words and sensory details.
 Helps the reader imagine your thoughts through your sensory words.
Descriptive Describes using sensory words and Asks the students to write about a person, Offers a vivid & detailed description of a

DESCRIPTIVE AND NARRATIVE WRITING


DULL VERBS: Dull verbs only tells us the basic facts,

 To convince the reader.


 It is an essay that convinces the reader to think in a certain way.
 CONVINCE THE READER ABOUT SOME POINT OF VIEW.

LANGUAGE USED AND TECHNIQUES

 Don’t use first person. A persuasive essay earns its credibility by achieving a certain level of objectivity. By making it personal
and using “I” statements, you make it sound more like a personal opinion, rather than a well- researched analysis.
