There are structures in our eyes called ‘cones’ and these cones allow us to see colour. Each of
these cones is designed to absorb a particular wavelength of light. This is then sent to the
brain as a message where it is translated into a colour. Most people have got three types of
cones, which are tuned to the wavelengths of red, green and blue. This combination means
that the average person can see about a million colours. However, some people called
‘tetrachromats’ have four types of cones. The colour wavelength of the fourth cone can vary.
But when combined with the original red, green and blue cones, tetrachromats can see about
100 times more tones and hues than the average person. Scientists are studying tetrachromacy
to better understand the brain’s visual processing power, and it is hoped that the research will,
in time, also benefit people with colour-blindness.
