Marine iguanas live on the 1rocky coastline of the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Charles Darwin referred to them as ‘hideous looking’ and ‘the most disgusting, clumsy
lizards’. 2Their eyes are set wide apart and 3they’re covered in spiky scales. Scientists believe
that millions of years ago, land-dwelling iguanas somehow crossed the sea, possibly on logs
or other floating debris, to land on the islands. There, they evolved into the marine iguanas
that we see today. Normally, 4marine iguanas are black or grey. This is because they are cold
blooded and their dark skin can absorb heat from the sun more quickly. However, during
mating season, 5male iguanas display bright, colourful skins. Whilst they might look fierce,
iguanas are in fact gentle. 6They eat algae and seaweed, and most frequently eat underwater.
7
They’ve got short, blunt noses, and 8razor sharp teeth which help them scrape the algae off
rocks. 9Their tails are flat like a crocodile’s which helps them swim through the water, and
they’ve got 10long, sharp claws which help them cling to rocks when underwater.
