The forests of Northern California have been home to nature’s skyscrapers for thousands of
years. Giant sequoias and California redwoods are the biggest trees on the planet. Originally,
these trees are believed to have lived all over the northern hemisphere, but today they are
found in fewer than a hundred forests scattered across Northern California. The title for the
world’s tallest tree belongs to a Californian redwood called Hyperion, but the world’s largest
tree, a giant sequoia known as General Sherman, has a base diameter of more than 11 metres
(36 ft.). It stands a massive 84 metres (275 ft.) tall, weighs 1.2 million kilogrammes and is
thought to be about 2,500 years old. Scientists have estimated that the world’s oldest giant
sequoia lived for more than 3,500 years. Sequoias need a huge amount of water to sustain
their enormous size, and they are supplied with this from the melted snow from the Sierra
Nevada Mountains. Whilst each tree would provide an astonishing amount of timber,
sequoias aren’t cut down and used for building materials because the wood is too brittle.
1 There have been skyscrapers in Northern California for thousands of years. ____
2 Giant sequoias were once found all over the globe. ____
3 Nowadays, there are fewer than a hundred giant sequoias trees. ____
4 There are fewer than 2,500 sequoia trees left. ____
