Geometric Designs: A Reflection

I have always been interested in geometric designs and patterns as they are very pleasing
in the eyes. As an architect, design and arts have always been a huge part in my design phase.
Through the various reports of the different groups, I have furthered my knowledge and
understanding with various information that I have just randomly been using throughout my
college life.

the first one that really caught my eyes were tessellations. There is this one song by a
western band, mild high club, entitled “tessellation” and considering that the band focused on
psychedelic pop, i have always envisioned their song as to what a person high on drugs would
see. For me that would be a kaleidoscope, a colorful image full of patterns without gaps. I never
thought that a kaleidoscope image would be a tessellation and it clicked for me as to why they
entitled their song as that. One part of their lyrics says that “my gestalt is hanging on the edge of
the fault”, just the fact that a gestalt is defined as that “an organized whole is more perceived than
the sum of its parts” can be a definition of a tessellation blows my mind.

the second learning that i had a revelation with is with the frieze patterns. I have always
known what a frieze pattern is considering that we have studied Roman and Greek architecture
in second year of college but it was always just discussed as a part of a Greek/Roman column. It
was always just a part as i did memorize it as “cornice, frieze, architrave, capital, shaft, and, base.
But i never thought of the frieze as having various patterns such as p111, p1g1, pm11, and many
more. I thought that it only had random patterns at most. I never thought it was categorized by a
mathematician.
