Why do I want to be a teacher

I remember my very first day of 4th grade like no other. I was the new kid on the block at a brand

new school in an area I wasn't familiar with. I walked to a bright, sunshine filled room with vivid

colors all around, pictures of different cities over the world & a bookshelf that seemed to go on

forever. My teacher introduced herself with this energy that made me want to come back the next

day to see what we would learn about. Over the years, I grew very fond of this teacher. I thoroughly

enjoyed it because she made everyone feel included, never shaming anyone who had questions

that other children already knew the answers too. This classroom was a sanctuary for anyone who

came in. I am almost 24 years old and I still think about how she made me feel and how thats

exactly how I want my future students to feel. My philosophy on teaching is that we educators have

the chance to mold these tiny human minds into something spectacular that will set them up for

success. We are giving them the building blocks to have a successful future. That is something that

I have always wanted to be a part of. I have done many different teachings over the years starting

when I was still in high schooler teaching a elementary age child how to read the letters in a

billboard above the refugee home. That moment of helping them understand what is being

displayed around them gave me the fire in my heart realizing that this is what I want to do. I want to

help give children the best building blocks I can so they can go forth and make a difference in this

world. Unfortunately in this profession the turnover rate is awful. Teachers are not getting paid

properly, benefits can be terrible and overall the respect for education has gone down. It definitely

has made me worried about my future and what it means for me but then this one single thought

comes to mind, “If I have the chance to make a difference in one child, I am going to do it.” I
believe that all children need someone to rally them on, to help them problem solve and how to do

good in school.
