3. HISTORY OF SAINT FRANCIS COLLEGE- GUIHULNGAN
Saint francis college was founded primarily to help the church in her mission of catholic
evangelization one aspect of the Franciscan evangelical mission is to live in brotherhood and
unity in the name of christ which offers a special witness to the coming of the kingdom and
constitutes the primary form of apostolate by which the word of life to the world is manifested
and proclaimed.
Its simple history dates back to June 1962 when the fracisan friars of sta Barbara province of
California USA had to establish the college.
This was the start the oriental academy had terminated its existence in 1961. Fr. Uric bove the
director and bro. Norbert binder the treasurer negotiated with the bureau of private schools for
a permit to operate the new high school
Three months after the opening of school ,two frnciscan friars from the province joined the
school fr. Bruno hicks and fr. Kierman Kilroy were assigned as director and teacher,
respectively.
The old buildings of oriental academy were repaired to serve s temporary quarters for the new
institution.
In march 1996, the new l shaped building at the hilltop (in the site of elementary building) was
reconstructed for the college department then a new friars convent is also regional house of
the Franciscan in negros island.
Since then,several OFM friars have been assigned to lead saint francis college – guihulngan
1998 by fr. Allan archebuchie OFM
1999 to 2001 by fr. Bernard m. lanuza OFM
2002 to 2005 by Bro. Salvador tumaca Jr, OFM
After the presence of the carmilite sisters in 2004 the Franciscan missionary sisters of the infant
jesus (FMIJ) Were requested by OFM friars to assist in the Christian formation here in sint
francis college- guihulngan city they were serving the institution until the present.
In 2006 to 2008 by Bro. Juanito O. Lebosada Jr. OFM although hev was substituted for a while in
2007 by Fr. Dominggo resurrection OFM because he was on a study leave a finish his doctoral
degree.
I June 13 2007, order of fruits minor in the phillipines in its desire to serve better. Divided their
community in the phillipines archipelago into two major mission area.
A new step in fraciscan education was also taken. In that same year. The establishment of a
preparatory school for boys interested in studying the priesthood in a view of joining the
Franciscan family later was done the old school builing near parish church was converted into a
boarding house for fourteen candidates most of their classes were taken at saint francis school
with the exception of latin fr. Kierman was the director of the pre-school while still holding
down his position as college dean and professor.
The additional construction in the same year was the school chapel,square in shape with the
altar sorounded by pews on three side servicing 200 students at a time this building was
designed with step roof hovering over the other buildings of the campus and fitting symbolic
end to first extensive building program of the new saint francis college.
In the summer of 1969, fr kierman left for USA wth the sudden change of administration a lay
partner was appointed for directorship while fr. Bruno hicks became the president of the board
of trustees.
In the mid-school year of 1970. The untimely resignation of lay director caused the creation of
SC junta to assume the duties and responsibilities of the school which lasted for several years
due to the major changed in various aspects.
In the present principal’s office and the collegians used the high school classroom in the later
afternoon and evening by Christmas the administrations wing was completed and by April the
library laboratories and college classrooms were available for occupancy.
The school year 1964- 1965 saw the beginning of saint francis elementary department the 104
pupils were house at first in the old building next to the parish church.
In December of 1964 the the present school canteen was constructed ad by February of 1965
the twin basketball courts were also constructed the hillside stadium whose brainchild was bro.
dennis reffins had been finished in time for the graduation ceremony in May.
A little over two months the elementary building was put up on the hill at the back area of the
property in July of the same year almost 200 pupils romped into the new six classrooms library
and home economics room.
In additional to the 197 elemetary pupils , 590 high schoolers and 208 collegians filled into the
new site for a total of 995 this marked a 78 increase of student in a period of four years the
teaching staff has risen from ten teachers in 1962 to 35 part and full time teachers in 1965.

Institution many structures were put up like the following amphitheater two school canteen la

from grade school to college departments FMIJ Residence and Franciscan vocation.
The school continuously takes pride in providing a transformative and contextualized education
to all its student body.
After 56 years saint francis college- guihulngan continues to exist offering the basic education
department with complete pre school elementary ,junior high school and senior highschool
department it also offers higher education with courses in BS in business administration wth
three specialization BS In elementary education BS In Information system and BS in Secondary
education major in English ,filipino mathematics and Social Science.
At present saint francis college- guihulngan continues to move forward to meet different faces
of challenges of time with its new thrust guided by its mission statement based from the gospel
and chrism and the vision and mission of saint francis assisi.
Luzon area is under the provice of pedro Bautista while Visayas – Mindanao mission area is
under the custody of st. Anthony de padua headed by the first custos friar , fr. Arturo
daquilanea OFM fr felix jungco OFM at the present the custos is fr. Renee dean, OFM
In 2009 Fr. Nello bulawan OFM was assigned school director.
In 2010 to 2012 , bro pablo cui jr. OFM was the assigned school director.
On February 6 2012 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in guihulngan city . saint francis college-
guihulngan lost its landmark buildings and structure specifically the 2 story building where the
library , science laboratories and speech laboratory were located and the high school building
which is now converted padua hall the destruction brought by the earthquake became a
challenge for the OFM – school administrator to continuously provide Christian and Franciscan
formation amidst the shortage of classroom.
In 2013, fr Ferdinand l mercdo OFM assumed as the school director under his administration
with the help of franziscaner and Franciscan mission and other funding.
VISION
Saint Francis college -guihulngan (SFC-G) envisions itself as a joyful instruction it is a cradle of
intellectual learners imbued with fraternal love and prayer witnessing simple lifestyle as sisters
and brothers to creation with faithful reliance on God’s providence.
MISSION
Inspired by the charism of Saint Francis of Assisi in the task of evangelizing and enhancing the
quality-of-life SFCG.
