The SICAM Station Unit can be flexibly used in the SICAM PAS/PQS system, e.g. as a Full Server or DIP. The
following chapters describe 2 configuration examples. Further examples are available in the SICAM PAS/PQS
documentation.
Configuration example 1
The example below illustrates the connection of 2 SICAM PAS systems to a higher-level control center.
One SICAM PAS system is implemented as a stand-alone system, whereas the other SICAM PAS system is a
distributed system with a Full Server and a DIP.
Several substations and various devices are connected to the SICAM Station Units.
SCADA
control center
TCP/IP
corporate network
Configuration example 2
Since the archives occupy a large amount of memory, you can configure the SICAM Station Units with several
SSDs/hard disks, and also a RAID system (if required).
Figure 1-2 Sample configuration for a SICAM PQS system with SICAM PQ Analyzer
Contents
If possible, the SICAM Station Unit (SICAM PAS/PQS Full Server and SICAM PAS/PQS DIP) should be
installed in the medium or bottom part of the 19" cubicle. This is necessary in order to ensure air circulation
through the device.
NOTE
For cubicles without fan cooling, the distance between 2 SICAM Station Units must be at least 2 HU (Height
Units) (see Figure 2-1).
For improved cooling, an air guide plate can be installed between the SICAM Station Units. The air guide plate
guides the hot air from the lower SICAM Station Unit towards the rear.
Air must flow through the SICAM Station Unit to provide for sufficient cooling. This means that no other units
which could possibly block or reduce the air flow may be installed directly below or above the SICAM Station
Unit.
1 HU = 44.45 mm
1 DU = 5.08 mm

2.1.2 Grounding
WARNING
The SICAM Station Unit must be properly grounded.
If no proper grounding has been implemented, there is a risk of electric shock because the housing of the
SICAM Station Unit may be energized. Furthermore, grounding measures are necessary in order to provide
protection against interference radiation.
✧ The SICAM Station Unit must be grounded through the rack or cubicle. If this is not possible, the unit must
be grounded via the mains feeder.
✧ To prevent unintended potential differences, it must be ensured that the SICAM Station Unit is not
grounded via 2 ground conductors.
Without the dongle, SICAM PAS/PQS is not ready for operation, and the SICAM PAS/PQS functions cannot be
enabled. Using the SICAM PAS/PQS Feature Enabler, enable your SICAM PAS/PQS functions with the
correct license keys during commissioning.
USB interfaces are available on the backplane bus in order to plug the USB dongle. These USB interfaces are
accessible from the inside, i.e. you must withdraw some modules in order to access them.
NOTICE
To prevent the modules being damaged, they must not be plugged in/withdrawn whilst energized.
✧ To prevent the plug-in contacts or modules being damaged, modules must be plugged in/withdrawn in the
idle state.
For more detailed information on handling electronic components, refer to Chapter 3.13.3.
NOTE
Prior to every hardware change, disable the FBWF for the hard-disk partition C: because the operating system
writes data on this hard disk drive when setting up and configuring the hardware. Re-enable the FBWF after
setting up and configuring the hardware.
NOTE
The CPU module is delivered with all default settings defined.

The orange LED on the front cover indicates that the +12 V output voltage is available and within the tolerance
range. The LED of the module which currently supplies the +12 V output voltage always lights up.
If the System Power standby switch is in the Off position (standby mode), the output voltage is not available
on either of the two power supply modules. The two LEDs light up nevertheless in order to indicate that input
voltages are still present on the power supply connection unit and on the power supply modules.

Power LEDs
The 3 LEDs on the front panel of the PSCM indicate which supply voltage (+3.3 V, +5 V or ±12 V) is available.
The PRIM PWR GOOD LED indicates that the +12 V input voltage from the primary power supply module is
available. If the LED is off, power is supplied via the secondary power supply module.

A long push of the CPU PWR BUTTON button has the same effect as a RESET on the CPU module.
Status LEDs
The 8 LEDs on the front cover of the Power Supply Controller Module (PSCM) indicate the status of the 8
relays. Since the relays and LEDs are connected in parallel, the corresponding LED lights up as soon as a relay
is activated.
Terminal block
The terminal block comprises 2 screw-type terminals for the contacts of the 8 relays:
• Relays 1 to 5: NO contact (open, de-energized)
The electric circuit is interrupted if the relay is not triggered.
• Relays 6 to 8: NC contact (closed when the connected device is de-energized)
The electric circuit is closed if the relay is not triggered.
SSU_PSCM_bs2.tif
In order to reduce heat development within the PSCM and the SICAM Station Unit, high-efficiency DC/DC
converters are used.
Power consumption
A fully equipped SICAM Station Unit features the following performance data. The table below indicates
expected maximum values including a safety factor.
+ 3.3 V DC ±3 % 50 mV 5A
+ 5 V DC ±3 % 50 mV 16 A
+ 12 V DC ±5 % 100 mV 2.5 A
The table indicates that the maximum power can be achieved with the + 5 V and + 3.3 V voltages. The two DC/
DC converters are therefore controlled by means of the phase controller logic in such a way that the peak
power, the EMC and the number of buffer capacitors can be reduced to an acceptable minimum.
Since the SICAM Station Unit is not equipped with an active cooling system, the power input of the PSCM must
be reduced to a minimum.
The status of the output voltages of the DC/DC converters is indicated by 3 LEDs on the front cover of the
PSCM. The LEDs are directly connected to the microcontroller. The active voltage is indicated by a green LED.
The table below shows the operational states and the meaning of the 3 LEDs:
Table 3-3
12V LED ±12 V (Unom) +12 V and -12 V +12 V and -12 V Tolerance =
available out of tolerance ±5 % of Unom
General information
The SICAM Station Unit is supplied by 2 independent power supply modules with an output voltage of +12 V
±5 % and a maximum current of 10 A. The two modules act as the primary and secondary power supply. Each
of them is supplied from a separate supply source.
During normal operation the SICAM Station Unit is supplied from the mains. Consequently, the primary power
supply module is active, and the secondary power supply module is in standby mode.
If a DC power supply unit is used as the secondary power supply module, it is switched off in order to save the
battery.
If the mains supply on the primary power supply module fails, an error message is sent to the PSCM. As soon
as this error message arrives at the PSCM, the PSCM can:
• initiate a switchover to the secondary power supply module
• switch off the primary power supply module
As soon as the mains supply is available again, the primary power supply module operates again without
problems. The PSCM performs the following actions:
• Changeover from the secondary to the primary power supply module
• Switching off the secondary power supply module
Function
The logic for switching over the supply voltage consists principally of 2 MOSFET transistors (Metal-Oxide-
Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor), 2 Schottky power diodes and one control logic.
SSU_PSCM_umschaltlogik_bs.tif
Figure 3-12 Block diagram of the logic for switching over the power supply
During normal operation the MOSFET transistor conducts the primary input voltage to the DC/DC converters.
The Schottky diode connected in parallel is not active because the voltage difference between the input and
the output is much lower than the conducting-state voltage of the diode. The power loss on the switch is
therefore reduced to a minimum.
The MOSFET transistor is controlled by a logic that receives its input signal directly from the microcontroller. A
similar logic controls the switch for the secondary input voltage (which is, however, switched off during normal
operation). The diode connected in parallel is not active as long as it is not operated in reverse-biasing mode.
To switch over from the primary to the secondary power supply module, the primary switch must be switched
off and the secondary switch must be switched on in order to prevent both MOSFET transistors being switched
on simultaneously. The changeover in both directions does not take more than 20 ms. The diodes connected
in parallel ensure an uninterruptible power supply during changeover. They must support the power loss until
the MOSFET transistors have performed the changeover.
The following diagram illustrates the time sequence of the changeover procedure:
SSU_PSCM_umschaltdiagramm_1.tif
Figure 3-13 Time sequence diagram of the power supply changeover logic
3.3.2.3 Microcontroller
General information
All PSCM control tasks are performed by the microcontroller, which is equipped with a FLASH memory for the
program code.
Error registers
The microcontroller detects all error messages and records them in error registers. When an error message
occurs, the related register is updated. A LOW logic signal is transmitted to the CPU via the backplane bus in
order to inform the CPU of a change in one of the error registers. The CPU reads the contents of the register
out of the microcontroller via the backplane bus. Using special software, the CPU can read out the error register
via the SM bus (Service Management Bus).
A total of 8 signals are required for the monitoring and control of the power supply changeover procedure (see
Figure 3-11 - block diagram of the PSCM). These signals are required for:
• Monitoring the inputs of the power supply modules
• Monitoring the outputs of the changeover logic
• Control of the changeover button
• Switching the power supply modules on/off
Besides the normal changeover mode, errors are processed for the following sequences:
• When the primary power supply fails, the system switches over from the primary to the secondary power
supply even though the secondary output voltage is not present. In this scenario, the system would crash
due to insufficient power supply. An error message is displayed to warn the user that the supply voltage
for the system will collapse soon. Special routines are started in order to ensure the safe shutdown of the
system.
• If the output voltage does not reach the setpoint, the system does not switch over from the secondary to
the primary power supply even though the primary power supply has recovered in the meantime. In this
case the system would still be supplied via the secondary power supply. No error message is created.
SSU_PSCM_Umschaltdiagramm_2.tif
The PSCM monitors all voltages generated on this printed circuit board by means of 2 threshold voltages each.
The Overvoltage error message is shown for the upper threshold voltage, and the Undervoltage error
message is shown for the lower threshold voltage. The status LED of the corresponding voltage (+3 V, +5 V or
±12 V) goes out.
Relay monitoring
Switchable relay contacts are connected to a terminal block on the front cover of the PSCM for display and
control purposes. The relays are controlled via the microcontroller.
For each relay contact, a status LED shows the current status (active / not active). The LEDs and relays are
simultaneously controlled by the microcontroller (e.g. in case of error messages). Since the microcontroller
does not have enough I/O ports for the direct control of the LEDs, an extension with 8 additional I/O ports is
used.
3.3.2.4 Relays
General information
The PSCM is equipped with 8 independently controllable relays (change-over contacts) for monitoring
purposes. The contacts are designed for a switching capacity of AC 230 V/1 A and DC 230 V/0.3 A with a
minimum insulation voltage of DC 500 V.
The control voltage on the coils is 5 V. Relays with change-over contacts are used in order to ensure that the
PSCM can control the normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) contacts.
Diagramm_Schaltleistung_Relaiskontakte_en.tif
An LED on the front cover of the PSCM is available for each relay. These LEDs show the current status of the
relay contact. The LEDs and the corresponding relays are controlled simultaneously. If a relay is in normally
closed state, the corresponding LED does not light up.
NOTE
The function of the 2nd LED can be influenced by the fact that the SICAM Station Unit belongs to a certain
domain, refer to Chapter 5.3.
Each relay is assigned 2 connections for the normally closed (NC) and the normally open (NO) contact via the
relay terminal block on the front cover of the PSCM.

3.4.2 Features
The CPU module consists of a printed circuit board in Eurocard CompactPCI format (mainboard). It features
high computing power and graphics performance and low power consumption.
Since the CPU module runs without an additional fan, the cooling element has been designed accordingly. Due
to its robust design, the CPU module also works particularly reliably under extreme environmental conditions.
With regard to its shock and vibration resistance, it complies with the industrial standard in accordance with
DIN, EN, and IEC.
The CPU module is connected to the backplane bus and other modules of the SICAM Station Unit via its 32-
bit-/33-MHz CompactPCI interface.
Additional interfaces of the CPU module are accessible via the front cover:
• 2 Ethernet interfaces (LAN 1 and LAN 2)
• 2 USB interfaces
• VGA interface (for the connection of a monitor)
The SDRAM is soldered onto the mainboard in order to ensure optimal shock and vibration resistance.
The BIOS software was specifically adapted to the SICAM Station Unit.

3.6.2.2 M-Module
An M-module provides 32 binary process signals via 32 digital I/O contacts (4x 8 I/O units). It features a
particularly high output current of 1.9 A per channel, optical insulation and an overtemperature protection
device.
3 5
1
4
SSU_I-O_Modul_bs.tif
Principle of operation
Input and output data is transmitted between the control block on the CPU and the optical insulated section of
each of the 4 I/O units via a serial interface. The data transmission is identical for the Input and output
information. The transmission time for all 8 bits of an I/O unit is 8 μs.

OUT
2
IN 36 V
3
SSU_I-O_Stage.tif
A monitoring function ensures that no output driver is active if external voltage is present even though no
voltage from the M-module is present. If the RESET is activated on the M-module, the monitoring function
ensures that all outputs are passive.
Inputs
The inputs are voltage-sensitive. The switching point defined is approx. 8 V. The input current is 4.4 mA at 24 V.
An interference suppression diode limits the input voltage to 36 V.
The input signals are serially transmitted towards the digitally isolated, binary I/O controller. The I/O controller
checks the status of the input signal every 8 μs. Only if the input signal remains constant for a period of 40 μs
does the I/O controller update the IN input bit in the corresponding I/O data register.
NOTICE
In order to prevent the M-module being damaged, the voltage on the input of the M-module must not exceed
the external supply voltage.
✧ For this reason the external power supply must be connected directly to the external device.
Outputs
Two 4-channel source drivers are used as output drivers. A connected device is protected against overcurrent
and switched off as soon as the overtemperature limit has been reached.
Under normal operating conditions (25 °C ambient temperature), each of the 8 outputs provides a constant
current of 1.9 A and a supply voltage of 32 V. For supply voltages of up to 35 V, the overcurrent error circuit
protects a connected device from short circuit against ground.
I/O registers
The M-module is equipped with a Binary I/O Controller (BIOC) which controls the inputs and outputs of a
channel. A 6-bit I/O register for storing the setpoint value and the actual value are available for each channel.
One bit of the I/O register is used in order to define the status of the Power Switch. If this bit = 0, the switch is
open and the I/O interface can be used as an input. If this bit = 1, the switch is closed. In this case, the output
voltage is held on the I/O interface.

NOTICE
Printed circuit boards and modules comprise components sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic
discharge can destroy the components. In order to protect printed circuit boards and components from
electrostatic discharge, the following precautionary measures must be adhered to when working on the SICAM
Station Unit:
• Shut down the SICAM Station Unit and disconnect it from the mains supply in order to add new

The 2 interfaces (ports) are mapped to an interface (port) of a virtual network card. Therefore, they become
redundant interfaces on the virtual network card. SICAM PAS/PQS recognizes the redundant interfaces as
Ethernet interfaces.
Using these redundant Ethernet interfaces, you can connect the SICAM Station Unit with 2 switches. If one of
them fails, the redundancy status is not switched over, i. e. the operational management does not need to be
switched over to the standby computer.

Subaddress parameters
The device descriptions for the SICAM Station Unit enable the definition of a variable with the
_SysMsg$Device address in order to observe the hardware.
For the SICAM Station Unit, this variable forwards system indications to the system.
These system indications are distinguished by their subaddress (Subaddress parameter) and map the events
listed in the table below. The values of the system indications can be observed in the SCADA value view or
forwarded to SIMATIC WinCC via the HMI for further processing.
NOTE
The name parameters listed below only serve as examples which can be modified. Their length is restricted to
20 characters. If longer names are entered, the device description is rejected during the import process.
The table below provides a list of power supply indications (PSHV modules).
