Introduction

One of the "Normative theories of press" is the libertarian theory. The libertarian ideas of the
16th century in Europe are where the original philosophy originated. Theorists of libertarianism
are opposed to authoritarian ideas. International trade and urbanization weakened the influence
of a rural nobility, giving rise to a number of social movements, such as the Protestant
Reformation, which called for individual freedom, control over their own life, and the right to
free thought. According to liberalism, knowledge is power and information is knowledge.
Libertarianism is devoid of all forms of control, censorship, and authority. The libertarian
philosophy promotes individuality and a small, non-intrusive government.

Libertarian Theory

Libertarian theory sees people are more than enough to find and judge good ideas from bad. The
theory says people are rational and their rational thoughts lead them to find out what is good and
bad. The press should not restrict anything, even a negative content may give knowledge and can
make better decisions whilst in the worst situation. The libertarian thoughts are exactly against or
opposite to the authoritarian theory which means the authoritarian theory says “all forms of
communication works under the control of the government or elite like kings”.

This comes with strength and weaknesses which are the following:
1. Freedom of press will give more freedom to the media to reveal the real thing
happening in the society without any censorship or any authority blockades.
2. Is reliable with U.S media traditions.
3. It gives more values for individuals to express their thoughts in the media.
4. Theory excessively positive about the media's willingness to meet responsibilities
which may lead people into negative aspects.
5. Is too positive about individual ethics and rationality.
6. Ignore the need for reasonable control of media.
7. Ignore dilemmas posed by conflicting freedoms.

Example:

The website known as "Wiki Leaks" has made several private or restricted papers
available to the public, but particularly classified documents. These articles give readers
a quick overview of the government and its operations, making it easier for them to
understand what is going on in society and giving them a wide range of options for
choosing a better president in the future.
Most of the country does not want to allow libertarian ideas since it may undermine
their power and kingdom because these publications occasionally go against the
government and its authority.
