SPM Assessment Marking Criteria

All of the Examination Syndicate’s English language profi ciency examinations are now aligned with the levels
described by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). SPM writing assessment criteria (and
tasks) have been developed in accordance with the CEFR descriptors and the features of performance which
they ascribe to different profi ciency levels.

Guidance for writing examiners

• In every instance, the primary consideration is: which descriptor best describes the composition being
evaluated. If you are unsure about other considerations (e.g. this seems to be covered under both sub-scale
x and y; I may be penalising the candidate more than once; but what about feature x?; would this candidate
pass or not; why is no one getting a 5), go back to asking this fundamental question.

▪ Positive phrasing of descriptors does not mean that a performance at that level has no weaknesses.
By comparing a descriptor to those adjacent to it, above and below, it should be evident what level of
ability and weakness is being described. For descriptors 1 and 5 in a particular level’s scale, the adjacent
lower and higher descriptor may be found in the overall scale.

▪ Candidates may achieve high marks on one criterion but low marks on another criterion; they should
be marked accordingly. For example, a composition may cover and develop all content elements, but
use the wrong genre and register. In that case, it may get a 5 for Content and a 1 for Communicative
Achievement.

▪ When achievement of descriptors vary, (e.g. stronger vocabulary coupled with weaker grammar,
content elements covered but not appropriately developed), or not all parts of the descriptor achieved, the
adjacent score point may be the most appropriate.

▪ Score points 2 and 4: There are two ways for compositions to receive the undefi ned levels (2 and 4):
(1) a performance that refl ects part of the higher descriptor and part of the lower descriptor, and (2) a
performance is clearly better than the lower descriptor and also clearly worse than the higher descriptor.

▪ Base evaluations on the totality of the writing presented. For example, do not overly focus on any
one particular instance of a spelling error, and do not let that one particular instance over-infl uence the
candidate’s mark for Language.

▪ When in doubt about some aspect of a performance, look for evidence elsewhere in the performance that
might remove the ambiguity.

▪ Overlength/underlength scripts: Length is not a criterion in the mark scheme. Scripts should be read in
full and marked as presented. A response that is longer/shorter than the guideline number of words may
be entirely appropriate, and its score should not be affected. On the other hand, an over-length script may
result in irrelevance (assessed under Content) or have an adverse effect on the target reader (assessed
under Communicative Achievement) and should be marked down as appropriate in those sub-scales.
Similarly, an under-length script may not exhibit an adequate range of language, may not communicate
effectively and/or provide adequate information, which would affect its score in the relevant sub-scales.

A1

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 1 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

▪ Lifting from the input beyond key words and phrases: Candidates should not be given credit for parts of
their response that have been lifted from the input. Lifted output may however provide negative evidence
about candidates’ abilities and should be considered and evaluated accordingly.

▪ Varieties of English: Candidates are expected to use a particular variety of English with some degree of
consistency in areas such as spelling, and not for example switch from using a British spelling of a word
to an American spelling of the same word in the same written response to a given task.

▪ Spelling is considered under the Language criterion.

▪ Punctuation is one factor among others under the Organisation criterion.

▪ ‘Generally’ is a downshifting qualifier meaning ‘not in every way/instance’. Thus, ‘generally

appropriately’ is not as good as ‘appropriately’.

Hi Diana,
Thanks for asking me. I simply cannot believe that Mum is turning 44! I think a new handbag is a good idea as she
only has one other handbag that Dad had bought ages ago. Besides, that handbag looks the worse for wear. I cannot
bear to see Mum carrying it any longer! She deserves something elegant and functional at the same time. The trip
to Langkawi is a great idea as well. However, Mum would insist on a family outing to the island as opposed to her
spending some time away from her responsibilities. That is the reason I would prefer we get her a handbag. As you
said, the sale is on. As such, we are bound to get a good bargain. I will be coming home this weekend so, we could
head to town to get it if you are agreeable with my suggestion.
Let me know. Bye.

Part 2
I would like to suggest having our year-end class trip on Pulau Redang. Why? Simply because there is a lot to
do there! First of all, the beaches there have crystal clear waters meaning that you can see what’s beneath the waves.
It would be the best place to be and have a holiday for our class.
We can spend four days three nights there in the hotel that is very affordable. It would be cheaper if we were to
book it this month. Booking.com and Agoda are giving very attractive discounts. It would cost RM100 per person
for a night. This covers three meals per day as well as activities arranged by the hotel. It comes to RM300 per person.
Transportation is another RM100 per person which includes the bus rental and the boat ride to the island. So the total
would be RM400.
A holiday there would mean we can enjoy the beautiful beach, the crystal clear waters and have a whale of a time
snorkeling. We can quite literally swim with the fishes. The underwater scenery is also mesmerising and bewitching
due to the coral reefs and a multitude of sea dwellers such as giant clams, sea urchins and tonnes of different fishes.
Furthermore, the hotel can also arrange for us to have a seaside bbq one of the nights so that would be great fun.

A6

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 6 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

We could have a campfire too. In addition to swimming and snorkelling, we can also play beach volleyball and go
island hopping, which can be arranged by the hotel, but at an additional cost of course.
I think these reasons are enough to justify my location of choice. Let’s make it happen for our class. We deserve
it.

Part 3
Question 4
Review of the film ‘Schindler’s List’
Steven Spielberg took to the screen to tell a tragic yet very real series of events that had gone untold since the
tragic events of the Holocaust. With every frame, Spielberg demonstrates the power of the film maker to create a
movie that tells a story respectfully, but in all brutal honesty.
The film depicts so many different messages to the audience, but the reality that one man can make a difference
is the hardest hitting. Schindler’s List was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won seven of them, and out of
respect for the people that had lost their lives in Auschwitz; Spielberg did not film inside the camp. The use of black
and white, added elements of colour, offscreen killing and audio only ground the film more and add to its success.
The point of the film is not to enjoy watching a movie with friends, it is supposed to jerk emotions and these elements
bring you back to reality; that this story is real and horrifying.
Almost all the film is presented in black and white and by using this technique Spielberg gives the audience a
more vivid sense of being in the same era as World War II in which the movie is set. Because the colour is drained,
so too is the feeling of happiness or freedom, as absence of colour compared to abundance of colour can very easily
represent depressing settings compared to cheerful settings. The scene in which Jewish working women are telling
‘bedtime stories’ on the way other Jews were treated really captures the use of black and white and how dark it makes
the scene. The women tell the others in the cabin that people were lined up and forced into a bunker to ‘shower’ but
were gassed instead, which is the truth but at this time none of them believe it, and the use of black and white in such
a scene shows that there is no hope, no life or colour despite the women not wanting to believe this woman is telling
the truth. They start to justify how this had to be rumour, and this shows them clinging to false hope in a black and
white scene. One of the techniques that the film is famous for is its use of colour in an all-black and white setting. The
film begins in colour, and this colour serves as hope. The candle being lit for the Sabbath shows a time where Jewish
tradition was upheld, but the smoke from the candle quickly fades into train smoke – again in black and white to show
hope fading away like smoke. The colour represents a time in which Nazism had not yet sucked the life and colour
from the world. Beginning this movie with a Jewish tradition reinforces that this film is about the story of the Jewish
people, not the Nazi’s. The effective use of colour in this scene allows us to set a scene for the time before the Nazi
party took over, when there was colour, hope and tradition for the Jewish people.
A filming technique that is commonly used by Spielberg is offscreen killings or assumptive killings. Although
the movie has its fair share of bloodshed, there are certain moments where the actual execution of the Jews is done
off screen and left to the imagination. During the scene at Auschwitz where a female Schindler Jew views another
group of Jews being led down into an underground room. Instead of showing us what goes on in there, the camera
tilts upward showing a large smoking chimney, which leaves the audience to imagine that the Jews are being burned
alive. Since the audience didn’t view what happened, they are left to their own imagination which allows them to
reflect on the reality which is why this filming technique works so well.
Another example of this technique is when the ashes fall from the sky, and although the children are oblivious
to it, some of the older and wiser people realise where it has come from, as do the audience and again you are left to
reflect on what you believe is happening. This allows the audience to play into their imagination using the information
gathered so far, which can be more confronting than viewing the murders on screen.
The use of audio in the film is used effectively to help the audience relate in a sense to the Jewish and alienate
the Germans; this is done not only through music but through language. In the scene where hundreds of Jewish
bodies are being burned in a large fire, there is a sombre choir track used which elevates the presence of evil. The
slow music only allows you to concentrate on the confronting scene more. One audio aspect of the film is designed
on the basis that most of the audience watching will be of English speaking background, so that when they hear the
German soldiers speaking in German, they probably won’t understand what they are saying, which alienates the
already sourly portrayed Nazis and puts the audience in the position of the Jews, who speak English. It is a common
belief that humans fear worst what they don’t understand, and the Jews are constantly subjected to vicious yelling in
a language they don’t understand whilst being ordered around. This makes both them and the audience wonder where
they’re going to be taken and creates the fear of what horrors may come rather than what horrors are already present.
This is effective in allowing us to relate to a certain part of the movie, and when you can relate to the confusion and
fear you are able to gather how the Jewish must be feeling.

The film Schindler’s List is not one for enjoyment or entertainment but for knowledge, and to remind us of the
horrors of war, which should never be repeated.

Question 5
The Most Important Day of My Life
The most important day of my life had just happened recently. It all started out when some friends and I were
bored. We wanted to do something that was fun and cool which also happened to be very bad. We decided we were
going to make a big firecracker.
The first thing we did was to go to a hardware store. We went there and looked around for a long time, till we
decided what we wanted to use in the firecracker. I watched a TV show the night before about bombs on PBS (Public
Broadcast System). So when I told my friends what I watched we decided to make a pipe-bomb. We bought the pipe
and went back to my house.
Once we got back to my house we started assembling the bomb. I remember watching how to make it off PBS.
So we first drilled a hole on one end of the cap so that the fuse could fit through it. Then we began to fill the pipe with
black powder. Once it got half full we stuck the fuse in, and began to fill it up with more black powder. Once it was
almost full we stopped, and we filled the rest up with hot glue. We did not know if the glue would ignite it or not
so we tested it out on a small sample of black powder. The glue did not ignite the black powder, so we filled up the
pipe with hot glue. We then screwed the steal cap back on the pipe with the fuse sticking out. We were done with
making the bomb.
Last we decided what to do with it now that it was done. All of us were in a destructive mood at the time. So
we ended up going out in the middle of the woods where no one lived for 10 km. We found these bed mattresses that
someone had thrown away. So we stuck the bomb in between there and lit it and took off in a car. We were about
1 km away, and we stopped and got out of the car. All of us were sitting there wondering if it would go off or not. It
was about two minutes and nothing happened. Then out of nowhere it exploded. You saw the huge explosion first
then heard it. We all were amazed how big of a smoke cloud it made and how loud it was. Everyone was scared,
and we decided to leave in case someone saw it. Later that day we went back to see what the explosion did to the
mattresses. It put a hole through both of the mattresses and a 3 foot crater in the ground. Everyone was laughing and
looking at each other saying “That was cool.” Nobody ever was caught for that or got in any trouble.
In conclusion that was the most important day of my life because it was the most fun I ever had in my life. It
also showed me what you can do if you put your mind to it. This story is 100% fictional because I could not think of
my most important day.

Subject: Farewell gift for Amber
Hi Zeus,
I’m very happy to hear that Amber has been accepted! I do think a farewell gift is necessary for her although I’m
not sure if a laptop or a new school bag is at the top of the list for a gift. I am thinking of buying her a brand new tablet
such as a Lenovo ThinkPad X13 to do school work with. The price of a new one would cost us around RM5,000 but a
secondhand would only be around RM1,000. Since Ronan and Alya would also chip in then the cost is pretty doable,
don’t you think? That’s my suggestion.
I can’t wait to hear from you. Bye for now!

Part 2
Reading; quite literally meaning when someone looks at a written text and starts to absorb the information from
the written linguistic message. It is one of the simplest hobbies you can do during your leisure time and can be done
anywhere. Reading is also a way for people to immerse themselves in someone else’s shoes or in a world of fiction
where laws of this world are not applied. You can also improve your knowledge on science, mathematics, language
and everything in between simply by reading books. Despite all these benefits, the average person only reads around
16 to 20 minutes every week hence today in class, my friends and I were discussing ways to encourage reading
among our classmates!
First and foremost, to find ways to encourage our classmates to read we first need to know why we do not like
to read. By doing so, we can understand the root of the problem thus allowing us to solve it. After a short period of
Q and A we managed to root out several reasons as to why our classmates do not read. We found out that the main
problem lies with the fact that they have not not been exposed to the different genres of books and reading materials
such as romance, thriller, horror, action and more. With this lack of knowledge and zero initiative to find out, they
assumed that every book is the same and thus were not inspired to read much if at all.
To combat the problem and encourage reading we must first allow my classmates to try reading a sample of
different genres. This would allow them to find out what piques their interest without forcing them to read a whole
book. We could provide them with excerpts from novels such as Harry Potter written by J.K. Rowling for the fantasy
genre, Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle for thrillers and many others just to give them a taste of what is
available. With this, my classmates could find a genre that is suitable, allowing them to read what they like thus
increasing reading among my classmates.
Moreover, we could have a read-aloud session in which a person is picked at random to read an excerpt they
themselves pick. This is because when you read aloud, everyone can give their hardworking brains a rest. Instead of
concentrating all of their energy on decoding the words on the page, they can pay attention to the more pleasurable
parts of reading: engaging characters, exciting plots, witty dialogues, interesting new facts, big discoveries, and
dramatic moments. My classmates can start falling in love with reading by having a different experience of books.
Finally, the school should make time for reading. This is because highly successful companies like Google,
Apple and Yahoo have a “genius hour” where employees can work on any project they want. Thus, we should create
our own ‘genius time’ where students can read any book or article they want. Reserve at least 15 minutes each day for
reading. Have children read independently or in pairs as their skill level allows. Ensure the environment is conducive
to reading by setting an expectation for quiet or turning on soft, instrumental music. If possible, make alternative
seating available so they can get really comfortable – consider bean bag chairs, DIY inner tube reading chairs, or
other flexible seating options.
I’m sure if we make the effort to show students the joys of reading they would start to pick it up on their own.

Question 3
Ways on how students in boarding schools can look after themselves
and manage their studies during the Covid-19 lockdown.
By: Nik Zarif Imran

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the norm of today’s society and that includes how students studied during
the lockdown in their respective boarding schools. The virus has a mortality rate of 3.4% and causes difficulty in
breathing, fatigue, headaches and the inability to taste food and has infected 132 million people worldwide with at
least 2.86 million people left dead during the time of writing. So it is clear that Covid-19 is not a virus we should mess
around with and students have to look after themselves while also managing their studies in their respective boarding
schools. But how can you, as a student, do that? It is remarkably simple and so I will share some advice and ways
you can do so!
First and foremost, students must not have any kind of physical contact with one another during the first two
weeks of entering the boarding school premise. This means no hugging, hand shaking or any other kind of physical
form of contact in general as the novel coronavirus spreads via inhalation of droplets containing the virus or touching
objects that are contaminated with these droplets. This also means that students must refrain from sharing objects
even during emergencies as studies suggest that the Covid-19 virus may persist for at least a few hours and up to
several days outside of the host’s body. Why two weeks you ask? Because the SARS-CoV-2 virus has an incubation
period of at least two weeks before revealing symptoms related to the disease.
Moreover, students also are encouraged to wash their hands frequently using soap and water or an alcohol-based
disinfectant. This is especially important if you’re about to prepare food or when you get back to the dormitories.
You are also encouraged to wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet or if your hands are visibly dirty. This
is to ensure that the pathogen does not enter your body via your hands when they touch the mucus membrane of your
eyes, nose and mouth. The soap and disinfectant can avoid infections as the soap molecule can penetrate into the virus
coat, splitting it apart and breaking the virus open, releasing its contents into the surrounding soapy water only to be
washed away by the running water.
Furthermore, students are advised to keep their distance and avoid crowds. This means that every student needs
to keep the greatest distance from other people when coughing, at least one metre to avoid breathing droplets which
could carry the novel coronavirus if the person is infected. This also means that every student has to follow the rules
and regulations of certain areas such as the limit capacity implemented in a room, or the minimum distance between
two tables and so on. This technique of social distancing can help prevent the transmission of Covid-19 between
different individuals in a community. Despite the social distance, students can still study with each other in groups of
no more than five students but all the group members must wear a mask throughout the discussions.
These tips and ways on how students can look after themselves and manage their studies are designed to keep
students safe from the pandemic while still allowing them to study. Remember that the strict rules and guidelines are
imposed on the students not to torture or be of hindrance for them but to protect them from experiencing the pain
affiliated with Covid-19 and I believe that every single one of the students plays a role in curbing the rate of spread of
coronavirus within the student community and help put an end to the endeavour that is faced by humanity.

Subject: Party venue
Hi Nelson!
I think I have an idea where we could host the party – Forest Valley Hall. It’s located near your house in Cheras and
the rent is rather cheap for such a grand hall! Moreover, the catering service is good and the hotel can help organise a
multitude of fun activities both for adults and children. I think we should do both since we want to satisfy both family
and friends. That’s all the ideas I have for now. Bye!

Part 2
The school library was one of the most used places to study among the students of SM Sains Selangor. Despite
this, the library has been neglected these past few years causing a decrease in cleanliness and service by the library
staff. This in turn caused many of the usual visitors of the library to gradually leave the place never to return again and
the decline directly impacted the environment of the library. The school library used to have tables filled with students
studying after school but now it is largely abandoned. I have a few ideas on how we can improve the condition of the
library back to what it used to be or maybe even better!
First and foremost, the library lacks a head librarian. This is because the organisation dissolved a few years back
leaving the librarians without a leader since. After the organisation disintegrated, chaos within the circle of librarians
ensued causing most of the members to leave and the ones who remained to be in a state of disorganisation. To fix this,
the library needs a new staff that will act as the leader of the remaining librarians. This is to ensure a new organisation
be built thus allowing the library to be managed more systematically.
Moreover, the library also lacks helpers in terms of librarians amongst the student body. After the organisation
dissolved, the number of librarians continued to drop as many members resigned and the number of people applying
for the position has been decreasing to almost a stand still. To combat this problem the current members of the
librarian team could organise a campaign or create posters to recruit more members. The library committee could also
put up the benefits of being a member of the library, for example an annual feast or something along those lines. This
could attract others to join the librarian thus increasing the number of helpers.
Finally, the library lacks books that can be used by students during study sessions such as history, geography and
science books. The fact that many books are outdated also means that the students are consuming false information
or information that is irrelevant for the current time. This problem stems from the fact that the lack of funds has led
the library to only buy secondhand books or receive books from donations or charity. To overcome this the school
must increase the amount of funds directed towards the library to increase the number of books that are provided in
the library.

Question 3
How to Combat Stress
By: Nik Zarif Imran

What is stress? Stress is a combination of physical, mental, and emotional feelings that result from pressure,
worry and anxiety. These pressures are called stressors. Some examples of common stressors are family problems,
illness, change of environment, exams, peer pressure and financial problems. According to Microsoft Encarta, stress

A11

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 11 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

is a physical, chemical or emotional development that causes strains that can lead to physical illness. So, what are the
signs of stress, why does it happen and how can a teenager overcome stress?
Signs of stress are easy to miss but if you see someone feeling preoccupied all the time, having difficulty
concentrating, and trouble thinking flexibly he or she might have stress. This is because stress forces people to
overthink little things causing them to feel irritated, angry and rebellious all the time. They feel as if they have the
weight of the world on their shoulders. Avoiding things that include keeping to one’s self, avoiding work, having
trouble accepting responsibility, and neglecting responsibility are also signs of mental stress.
Firstly, school seems to be the main cause of stress. Teenagers must encounter daily attacks from school, for
example the heap of homework they get every day can even be compared to Mount Everest, the difficult exams and
high expectations cause them to feel burdened. Students nowadays also get a lot of extra work just to earn extra marks
to make up for their low exam marks, some of them also face monstrous bullies that exist everywhere. Just one school
bully can cost their lives.
Secondly, dysfunctional family institutions are also one of the causes of stress. Some teenagers’ parents fight
every single day. Eventually this would make their heart break due to seeing their loved ones fight. Some other teens’
parents might have affairs, leading to a chance of a parent being replaced. Nobody likes it when one parent walks
away due to cheating. The emotional rollercoaster would eventually cause the teen to be burdened by stress and
sometimes depression.
To overcome stress one should avoid negative thinking. Acknowledge the positive things in your life and begin
to re-establish some balance in your emotional register. Avoid focusing on only the bad things that happened during
your day but consider the good as well. You should always stop and count your blessings. Write down even the
simplest things that you have and enjoy: A roof over your head, a bed to sleep on, food, warmth, security, good health,
friends and family.
Finally, eating properly is one of the best ways to overcome stress. Your body needs to be healthy, happy and
properly fuelled to help you tackle stress. Like it or not, stress is a bodily reaction that reacts to anything that disturbs
its natural state meaning that your body may have a profound effect on producing and relieving stress. Hence by
eating properly, your body may relieve stress on its own if given enough time.

Question 5
The Most Memorable Day of My Life
A Weekend in New York
Mum handed my sister and me our passports and boarding tickets, hugged us tightly for what seemed like five
minutes, and waved goodbye to us as tears trickled down her cheeks. It sounds strange to say this but I couldn’t stop
smiling, and neither could Sarah, my 19-year-old sister who was my guardian for the weekend. She was such a laugh,
and always had something funny to say about everything. I knew it was going to be a fun and unforgettable weekend.
The plane was due to depart from Heathrow to New York at one that Friday afternoon of the 13th of October. As we
sat laughing and joking at the departure lounge our flight number was displayed on the screen, and next to it the word
‘Boarding’ flashed. It was time to leave. We picked up our hand luggage and headed to gate number 13. ‘Typical!’ I
said to myself in my head, ‘Out of all 50 gates, we have to board through the unluckiest number of them all!’ Still,
I’m not a very superstitious person; I’m just not that keen on flying. And then we were off.
We caught a taxi to the building and entered a lift which took us halfway up the Empire State Building. We then
had to swap to another lift because the building is so tall that having only one lift would cause the cables to snap.
Being told this by the guide didn’t exactly help with my fear of heights. Finally, we reached the top and the view was
just breathtaking. I had never seen anything like it. I stood there speechless for about thirty minutes, and looked out
over the city for miles. It was a surreal experience and views that imprinted my mind. Next up, we had to catch a ferry
to Staten Island to see the world-famous Statue of Liberty. I took pictures but I knew the photos wouldn’t show the
astounding statue that stood before me. We caught a ferry back to the mainland and walked around Times Square. It
held a resemblance to Piccadilly Circus, but was somewhat more exciting. We both looked like typical tourists with
our huge bags, maps and cameras but everyone around was friendly and helped us with directions. It was getting late
in the afternoon and we had been shopping for an hour or so and ended up in a nail bar.
“This is why you have to live life to the fullest and take every opportunity that comes along. It is not every day
you get taken for a weekend shopping to New York, is it?” she then smiled at me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
She was always capable of putting a smile back on my face, no matter how I felt. My sister had always been known
as a joker and so to hear her say something like this really meant a lot. We got back to the hotel mid-afternoon and
packed up our bags. Our flight departed at six that evening and we were on our way home. We landed at Heathrow at
one in the morning. I slept for most of the plane and car journey home. I walked in the front of the door of my house
and inhaled deeply, it smelt of home, and I smiled to myself. The holiday was really fun and it had taught me a lot.

It brought me closer to my sister and the advice she gave me at ground zero will stay with me forever, and the new
experiences will stay with me forever too. I hope to return back there in the near future, to relive my happy memories.

Subject: Hiking on Saturday
Hi Asyraf,
Sure! Why not? I’m absolutely free this Saturday. My sister and I had wanted to visit our uncle’s farm but he
had to attend to some business. So, I am all for this. We should go to the Bukit Serdang Hiking Trail as the hiking
there is calming for the soul. On top of that, the air is very refreshing with nature surrounding it. I think we should
also invite Ajwat and Hanif since their houses are close by. Furthermore, the more the merrier, right? All right, I think
that’s all. Bye!

We all know what hobbies are – you know, those fun activities we love to partake in just to distract ourselves
from the stresses of life. Hobbies make us feel rejuvenated and satisfied, even when our lives are going through some
disappointing phase. Although there are multitudes of different hobbies there is one interesting and unique hobby that
I would like to take up which is writing. There are multiple reasons as to why I would like to take up writing and here
are a few reasons.
First and foremost, the reason why I would like to take up writing is because writing would teach me to become
creative and open-minded. This is especially true if I were to write a fantasy story or novel where everything and
anything is possible. Imagine a world of fairies and magic; without creativity and open-mindedness you cannot
possibly imagine such worlds. By writing, I would force myself to become more flexible and open to possibilities
even if it’s absurd or downright bizarre.
Moreover, I would like to take up writing as it would teach me to be more patient. This is because writing is
not an instantaneous thing nor is it easy. Writing needs time and sometimes a writer could encounter a period where

A13

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 13 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

one is unable to write called a ‘writer’s block’. If the writer is not patient, then he would most probably would leave
writing as he loses his passion due to the lack of patience. To write a decent story or book you would also need a lot
of experience. To gain those experiences you need to spend time, make mistakes and to never ever give up on writing,
which of course requires patience.
Lastly, I would like to take up writing as it can help me generate income. This may seem trivial but by writing
I can generate money via commissions or even royalty if I publish a book. Having a hobby that can generate money
would be a lifesaver as I grow up and my expenses increase. The amount of money gained may vary and of course it
may not be much but who knows? If I work hard maybe I can be the new JK Rowling.
All in all, the reasons why I would take up writing might be childish but those reasons are the ones that motivate
me to someday write my own story. Writing would most definitely help me become more patient, creative and finally
to have vision.

Question 5
The Most Enjoyable Day of My Life
It was a day like any other. The sun was shining through the slithers on the curtains of my bedroom window,
directly shining upon my glorious slumbering face. Of course, I was displeased by the interruption and so I decided
to cover my whole body with a blanket. As soon as I began drifting back to the realm of dreams my phone began
to vibrate intensely as dozens, no, hundreds of messages began flooding in. Annoyed, I picked up the phone and
squinted my eyes trying to read the messages on the screen. “Where are you?”, “Earth to Nick are you there?” and
other messages that seemed as if they were trying to get in contact with me were piling on top of each other. That was
when it dawned upon me… I had an outing today!
I got up, immediately feeling awake due to the sudden adrenaline rush and stripped off my clothes as I went
to shower. While taking a bath I could hear my phone vibrating once more as I assumed another wave of messages
were being sent to confirm that I was indeed still alive. I lathered my body with soap, my hair with shampoo while
also brushing my teeth to minimise the time taken for me to finish showering and as I was rinsing everything off the
doorbell rang. In an even more panicked state I quickly dried myself and wore any clothes that looked appropriate for
an afternoon outing with my friends and sprinted down the stairs. Arriving in front of the door, I took a moment to
calm myself and comb my hair before opening the door with a smile plastered on my face. Standing opposite of me
were my three best friends, Misa, Wilson and Ameerul all with a grumpy look. I tried to apologise but they all waved
it off and signalled me to follow.
Feeling bad and a tad guilty for making them wait, I tried to lift up the sour mood as we entered the car that
Misa’s dad had provided along with a driver. “Um, so what are we going to do today?” I asked sheepishly. They
all ignored my question and played with their mobile phones. I kept silent, respecting the tense atmosphere as it
was my fault to begin with. The driver looked at Misa who was sitting next to him and whispered something that
was incoherent to me, Misa nodded with a hint of a smile on her face. As soon as she nodded, the driver began
driving to whatever location he was told to go. The ride was silent as if we were in a morgue and soon, I fell
asleep. I woke up about an hour later only to find myself being stared at by the trio. It was confusing to say the
least. “What are you guys doing?” I asked, genuinely worried about what was going on, and they smiled. “Do
you remember what day it is today is?” Ameerul asked. I thought about it long and hard before sudden reality
began to sink in. “It’s… my birthday?”
Immediately after saying that, all four doors of the vehicle opened simultaneously as I saw a crowd gathering
around my transport. I was escorted outside the vehicle by Misa, who was smiling broadly. Still in a state of confusion
I looked at the crowd only to notice that they consisted of my friends, family and teachers! “Surprise!” They cheered,
before they started singing the happy birthday song. At that point I was almost in tears but what happened next broke
the dam. Wilson and Ameerul were pushing a trolley which held the largest birthday cake I had ever seen. On top of
the cake wer 18 candles marking my age with the words ‘With love” written on the cake. I looked at my best friends
and with tears running down my face, I uttered the words “Thank you”.
After cutting, distributing and eating the humongous cake came the party. Turns out Misa had booked the whole
Lexus Grand Hotel for the celebration including the facilities and staff. Considering that Misa was the daughter of a
conglomerate head this was not that surprising as she could even buy a whole country if she wanted to. The first thing
we did was hang out at the arcade, playing all the games there ranging from arcade shooters to dance battles and even
snooker. After playing for a few hours it was already dinner time. The staff escorted everyone to the dining room
where food literally covered every inch of the table. I enjoyed the juicy foie gras, salted caviar and the scrumptious
crumpets. The dinner service also included a jazz band that played as we ate, creating a serene atmosphere that was
filled with elegance.

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 14 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

After dinner, the highlight of the celebration took place; the fireworks show. Beautiful colours filled the night
sky as hundreds of fireworks were launched, implanting the view into my memory. At 12 o’clock in the morning, my
birthday ended and so did the celebration. Ameerul, Wilson and I were escorted to our VIP suite where we chatted
until we fell asleep while Misa was escorted to her penthouse nearby. To be honest, after Wilson and Ameerul fell
asleep, I was still wide awake. That day was singlehandedly the most bizarre day of my life and yet it was also one of
the most enjoyable days. My birthday was celebrated grandly by my friends, family and even teachers. I got to taste
exquisite food prepared by the chefs of a well-known hotel. I got to eat the largest cake I had ever seen and I played in
the arcade for hours and hours with my besties. The reasons why the day was enjoyable were seemingly infinite. As I
began to tear up once more, I uttered the words, “This is the most enjoyable day of my life.”

Subject: Weekend Plans
Hi Mustapha,
I’m glad your parents have allowed us to spend the weekend together! I have been thinking about our plans
this weekend and have settled on visiting the famous Kuala Lumpur City Centre. There, we would be able to visit
Petrosains. In addition, the Discovery Centre is a place where we can enjoy a multitude of scientific exhibitions. I
have already bought the tickets for both of us since the tickets are usually sold out during weekends and we don’t
want to miss out on the fun now, do we?
I’m looking forward to seeing you.

Part 2
Lately, there has been a spike in the number of students coming late to school or being absent. These sudden
increases have caused the school administrators to be both enraged and worried. After a discussion with my friends,

A15

SBP BI (Ans)6th 5/5/21.indd 15 10/05/2021 6:19 PM

the main causes of the problem have been identified which include traffic congestion, waking up late and being
unmotivated to go to school.
The first problem is getting stuck in traffic on the way to school. This is mainly the result of the distance between
the school and the home of the student. Having to use highways in the weekday mornings means that the students
have to travel alongside thousands of adults rushing to get to work causing the roads to become congested and thus
causing the students to arrive late to school. This can be overcome by going out to school early, allowing the students
to reach school before the congestion begins.
Furthermore, the most common problem among students is waking up late. It is a direct consequence as a result
of turning in late. Considering that the human body needs 8 to 10 hours of sleep, sleeping late causes the students to
repay the number of hours of sleep which the students need causing them to be late or if awoken too late, absent. To
negate this, students need to become responsible for their own actions and try to sleep early. If they fail to do so then
they need to sacrifice the amount of sleep they get to get to school early.
The final problem is the toughest problem to solve as being unmotivated to go to school stems from the fact
that schools are generally not a fun place. This is especially true for schools that have tight rules and standards of
procedure causing the students to feel restricted. This, in turn, causes the students to feel unmotivated to go to school
hence them coming late to school or being absent. To help the students gain their motivation back and reduce the
amount of cases of students being late or absent, the school needs to create an environment where the students feel at
ease. They need to be motivated to go to school on a daily basis.

Question 4
Review: The Best Fast Food Restaurant
The best fast food restaurant is undoubtedly Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC for short! If you ask me what I
would rate the franchise out of 5, I would tell you that it is 5 out 5 a million times over. One of the reasons why I think
it is the best is the fact that KFC cooks the best fried chicken in the fast food industry. The fried batter is crispy and
crunchy, the chicken is juicy and scrumptious and the taste of everything in general is absolutely perfect. It does not
matter which part of the chicken you decide to eat, every bite brings joy and that is a fact.
Furthermore, the price offered by the joint is outrageously cheap compared to other fast food chains. Imagine, a
burger, a piece of fried chicken, French fries and soda will only cost about RM9.00. That there is a full stomach with
extras for later that cost half the price of that offered by other fast food restaurants such as McDonalds or Wendy’s.
For someone who is currently struggling during the economic crisis, this means that KFC acts as my lifeline during
these tough times due to Covid-19. This also include many university and college students that have student loans to
pay or working adults that work minimum wage.
Moreover, the customer service provided by the fast food joint is simply the best. The policy, “customer is
always right” has never been broken since I can remember and quite frankly I am impressed. If there’s something
wrong with your food or there’s a mistake in your order, they will gladly refund you or make you another set of food.
Of course you will have to prove your purchase via a receipt but that is it, no drama and no hassle. The employees
there are also kind and polite towards the customers and there has even been a video of a KFC manager treating a
homeless man to lunch with his own money as the man was starving.
All in all I would definitely recommend it to everyone I know because the fried chicken there is delicious, the
food sets are cheap and the staff are friendly not only to the customers but also to the general public.
