Introduction
The TOEFL iBT test Writing section
measures your ability to write in English
in an academic setting, and to present
your ideas in a clear, well-organized way.

The writing tasks measure:


English proficiency
Deep knowledge on a topic.
Each essay is a first draft.
High score / some errors.
Writing Tests
Test time: It takes about 29 minutes

There are two writing tasks.

Integrated writing task (20 minutes) — read


a passage and listen to a lecture, then write
in a response.

Writing for an Academic Discussion task


(10 minutes) — state and support an
opinion in an online classroom discussion.
Writing Integrated
1. How is the question structured?
Read a passage about a topic.
Listen to a short lecture (only once).
The reading passage will reappear,
along with the question.
2. How to approach the question?
Summarize the points made in the lecture.
Explain how they relate to the reading.
Make sure you answer the question.

A response at this level successfully

Scoring Criteria

The response is a relevant and very clearly expressed contribution to the online
discussion, and it demonstrates consistent facility in the use of language.

A typical response displays the following:

• Relevant and well-elaborated explanations, exemplifications, and/or details


• Effective use of a variety of syntactic structures and precise, idiomatic word
choice
• Almost no lexical or grammatical errors other than those expected from a
competent writer writing under timed conditions
